What the Brits need is another Oliver Cromwell.
Like we need a hole in the head.
The governments Oliver Cromwell had allegiance to (the commonwealth and its successor, the protectorate) were essentially military dictatorships dominated by rival bands of religious zealots. Under their wayward direction everything that could bring joy in this life was systematically dismantled. The theatres were closed, festivals were cancelled, saints days were revoked (particularly saints not mentioned in the Bible). Marriage was made into a purely civic ceremony - even Christmas and Easter were abolished, in spite of what they represented.
It must have been like living under a seventeenth century English Taliban. No thanks. I’m not replacing Islamic oppression with a homegrown variety.
