Senator Edward "Ted" Kennedy (D-MA) almost took the presidential nomination away from Democratic President James Earl "Jimmy" Carter in 1980, IIRC. On the GOP side, then former Governor Ronald Reagan (R-CA) almost took the nomination away from Republican President Gerald Ford in 1976.
