EDINBURGH, Scotland — Scotland freed the terminally ill Lockerbie bomber on compassionate grounds Thursday, allowing him to die at home in Libya despite American protests that mercy should not be shown to the man responsible for the deaths of 270 people.

Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill said Abdel Baset al-Megrahi's condition had deteriorated from prostate cancer. Al-Megrahi had only served some eight years of a life sentence, but MacAskill said he was bound by Scottish values to release him.

Interesting I did not know that Malta had a connection to this trial.

Thanks for the update on the errors. It appears that Fox may have hired some reporters who graduated from the Dan Rather school of dumbness.

Thanks, what I am saying is that this is NOT about compassion. This is about a cover-up of the Scottish Justice system because many believe the appeal Megrahi was making would have won - and so as he was dying they made a deal asking him to drop his appeal (which he did) so he could be released.

This is not an anti-American move or about compassion - this is a get-out.

I still recall when it happen.

One of the passengers who was on the flight before it continued its flight to the US mentioned meeting a little girl in a red dress.

He wept saying, The little girl in the red dress did not deserve such an ending.

Mizzies like Megrahi have no compassion for the victims aboard Pan Am Flight 103.

To what miles away seems like a trivial matter (ie geography not the release) seems to us here like a monster mistake.

Like calling New York Philadelphia or Hillary Clinto America’s top judge.

We have our own aircraft crash that is very suspect.

TWA 800. I fear we will never find out the real facts of that crash either.

Fox News bimbo: “So how do you feel watching the man who murdered your son ascending the stairs to the plane?”

Please don’t flame me but this is with the consent of the US Administration. This is a Machiavellian deal agreed to stop Libya’s Nuclear programme and general terrorist activity.

The UK wouldn’t let this man go if America was truly against it. To give a quote from a Scottish legal analyst:

“One legal analyst warns that the potential return of Megrahi - even with the US Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton, urging the Scottish government that he should serve out his sentence in Scotland - should not be seen in isolation. “This is just the latest chapter that began in 2003 with Libya openly abandoning its nuclear weapons programme,” he said.

“There has been a Libyan agreement on compensation for the victims of the bombing, the 2007 deal on prisoner exchange, the commercial agreements brokered by Tony Blair, on oil and gas with BP.”

I did like his response to the line about compassion.

To receive compassion one needs to ask for forgiveness and I have heard no request for forgiveness.

On a darkened road, whilst on a walkabout, may he run into some burly family members of his victims so they can display some “compassion” toward him.

Fox News bimbo: “So how do you feel watching the man who murdered your son ascending the stairs to the plane?”

Megan is no bimbo, but I agree the question was poorly stated. She chould have asked "what are your thoughts as you watch this man ascending the stairs to the plane"?

I'm praying this man will live every single minute in terror that the plane carrying him to freedom might explode..

(and NO, I don't want it to)!

Are you defined as an American by your government?

The SNP are a minority government and most SNP voters would not be for this.

Can I also point out that Fox repeatedly pointing out one of the Fathers of a girl who died at Lockerbie who forgives the killer(s) is as representative of Scotland as the BBC quoting (ad infinitum) Ward Churchill.
