Below is a photo of a wreck in Jefferson Parish, LA (near New Orleans ) between two trucks and a Smart Car.

Not sure if it's a real snapshot, but it does give you something to think about.

That thing looks like it acted as an airbag for the red truck’s benefit.

People over here are discussing that is not a Smart car in that accident, but a Chevy car of some kind. The reason is the car wheel in the accident has 5 lugs, whereas a Smart car's wheel has only 3 lugs.

Update from my previous reply to you. Snopes.com has found out the car is actually a Ford Escape in your photo. The driver survived the crash. Info here: http://www.snopes.com/photos/accident/smallcar.asp
