Obama invokes grandmother's death in health debate

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) - Now, it's personal. President Barack Obama invoked his own anguish over the death of a loved one as he challenged the debunked notion that Democratic efforts to overhaul the nation's health care would include "death panels."

"I just lost my grandmother last year. I know what it's like to watch somebody you love, who's aging, deteriorate and have to struggle with that," an impassioned Obama told a crowd as he spoke of Madelyn Payne Dunham. He took issue with "the notion that somehow I ran for public office or members of Congress are in this so they can go around pulling the plug on grandma."

"When you start making arguments like that, that's simply dishonest—especially when I hear the arguments coming from members of Congress in the other party who, turns out, sponsored similar provisions," Obama said.

In a debate in which he often sounds professor-like, Obama spoke with a rare bit of emotion that seemed to counter that of vocal health care opponents as he referenced the beloved grandmother who helped raise him and who he called "Toot." She died of cancer at age 86 on Nov. 2, two days before he won election to become the nation's first African-American president.

I have thought this before! Even during the debates with McCain.

He is petulant. This guy is emotionally arrested at about age 14. And not a healthy 14 yr old, either. One with NPD and lots of anger issues.

Even if what he says is true, he won’t be president forever (thank God). But if he pushes us onto the slippery slope, who knows where we’ll be in 5, 10 or 20 years. He himself said a few years ago that he wanted incrementalism toward single payer and he was willing to wait 5, 10 or 20 years.

Do not believe this cretin for a second. He is a congenital liar, just like Clinton was. There is absolutely no integrity in the office of the Presidency today.

“I don’t think Baracko should “go there” with his “typical white person” grandmother.”

I think the same thing.

The story is just as phoney and convoluted as a lot of other things about obama.

The cancer was announced at her death, I do not ever remember hearing during the campaign that she had cancer.
I am not aware that she ever was hospitalized or ever left her apartment once his campaign started in earnest (early 2008 or sooner).

How do you get chemo or radiation and never leave the apartment? And/or get treated, and no one in the press or local news ever notices?

How does a terminal cancer patient get a hip replacement? How does a hip replacement patient stay confined in an apartment without PT? What hospital and when did she get a hip replacement? Never did hear.

*****NEWS FLASH, “the One” just landed and deplaned at Sky Harbor Airport (Phx) and it’s hot, haha.

The tv station’s camera pans to Air Force One and no matter who’s in it, the site of that plane awes me, but this does leave me wondering, HOW MUCH LONGER WILL THERE BE THE UNITED STATES?

"I just lost my grandmother last year. I know what it's like to watch somebody you love, who's aging, deteriorate and have to struggle with that,"

I just can't let that one go so easily . . .

" . . . watch somebody you love . . ." . . . uh . . . I thought that he never went to see her. He finally visited her a few weeks before she died (without the wife and kids, who may have never met her), so he didn't exactly watch her die.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it appeared that he had ignored her for years, before having to make a last minute bedside visit. I always wanted the Press to investigate that. After all, the woman was, in effect, his mother more than his grandmother. It struck me as bizarre that they weren't closer.

I suspect his visit was for one of two reasons:

1. To act as her "death committee" and tell them to pull the plug on her. He was pretty busy campaigning . . . and it was going to be very inconvenient if she lingered around. And God forbid if he got elected and someone actually got to her and asked her questions about his past. She might have told the truth.

2. To sanitize her home of any incriminating documents. For all we know, she had all of her daughter's personal effects and paperwork . . . marriage license, passport, divorce papers, adoption papers, Kenyan birth certificate . . .

Honestly, I was pretty appalled that he didn't return to HI to attend a memorial service. This guy is such a fraud.

"...why would anyone think he really gives a damn about OUR HEALTH CARE?"

As I said in another thread, it is a disquieting fact that the people who are crafting this legislation, beginning with the person who is pushing it the hardest, have no problem with the concept of aborting a 8 3/4 month baby that unexpectedly refuses to die, then leaving it gasping out its short life on a steel table in a linen closet without even a comforting hand to let it know that its short spark of life touched someone.

I am not making it into an abortion issue. But the point remains that when we surrender our choices to legislation created by those people, we all can be that doomed child.

Was “Toots” denied care?

Did any insurance company refuse her treatment, raise her rates or cancel her policy?

Would Obamacare have saved her from her Cancer?

If not, then how is this pertinent?

If anything, Obamacare would have denied her that new titanium hip, and/or hastened her demise from the cancer that would no doubt be left untreated.

I guess that way, he wouldn’t have had to suffer the anguish of watching her deteriorate.

I am always confused at how those who can AFFORD to help relatives with health care costs, DON’T, but are often among the loudest for the government to provide it...

Hey 0bummer - actions speak louder than words. You could have helped old Grandma - you let her die (under the bus?)..

True. He didn’t even go to her funeral. He had hardly seen or communicated with her at all in recent years. He was being dishonest about watching someone close to him aging, as she was not close to him in her later years anyway.

The story is just as phoney...

Gees, maybe she never left- suffered with a broken hip and was just given a pill and a mattress.. Could be he visited there to get her sign on to a living will.. Not a will to live. God what horrors -his the last face she saw.

I thought I heard a quote by obambi saying that he wondered if someone with cancer should have gotten a hip replacement operation at her advanced age.

I would imagine that Mr. Obama's "people" got with the senior management of the SRM and explained to them that Grandma was not news.

I think so, but would need to find the quote.

OTOH, WHERE the EFF does he or any other government official see fit to pass judgement on this? That is the basic question with this, in my opinion.

Never mind that liberals want to hand this system which, though flawed, is still the best around, over to the same people and mindset that brought us the Post Office, the Subprime Mortgage Crisis and Cash for Clunkers, just to name a few.

I don’t think the expression: “...pulling the plug on grandma” is a winner for him. It’s kinda creepy.
