You're Bob Dylan? NJ police want to see some ID

Rock legend Bob Dylan was treated like a complete unknown by police in a New Jersey shore community when a resident called to report someone wandering around the neighborhood. Dylan was in Long Branch, about a two-hour drive south of New York City, on July 23 as part of a tour with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp that was to play at a baseball stadium in nearby Lakewood. A 24-year-old police officer apparently was unaware of who Dylan is and asked him for identification, Long Branch business administrator Howard Woolley said Friday. "I don't think she was familiar with his entire body of work," Woolley said. The incident began at 5 p.m. when a resident said a man was wandering around a low-income, predominantly minority neighborhood several blocks from the oceanfront looking at houses. The police officer drove up to Dylan, who was wearing a blue jacket, and asked him his name. According to Woolley, the following exchange ensued: "What is your name, sir?" the officer asked. "Bob Dylan," Dylan said.

Dylan says “Dreams of My Father” piqued his interest in Obama, but that doesn’t mean the ever-irascible singer-songwriter is suddenly buying into politics as an agent for change.

“Politics creates more problems than it solves. It can be counter-productive,” Dylan told Flanagan in this excerpt, which can be found on BobDylan.com (the full interview can also be downloaded and read via .pdf). “The real power is in the hands of small groups of people and I don’t think they have titles.”

You obviously know nothing about the guy. He’s not a partisan and he sure ain’t an environmentalist.

Is Bob Dylan some sort of God or something that everyone is required by law to know who he is and what he looks like? I would walk right past him as well. If I bothered to remember what he looked like I'd probably hurl an insulting comment at him

lol...I have no doubt about that, cause you're a class act.

The officers asked Dylan, 68, to accompany them back to the Ocean Place Resort and Spa, where the performers were staying. Once there, tour staff vouched for Dylan. The officers thanked him for his cooperation. "He couldn't have been any nicer to them," Woolley added.

Bob is good people, which the article clearly depicts, regardless of what the ignorant buckets mouths bark from the side lines.

Dylan did not endorse him. Asked if he would be a good president, his answer is “I don’t know”. Dylan was a helluva lot more glowing about getting an “honorary Texan” award from George Bush than anything he’s said about Obama.

“This land is your land and this land is my land, sure, but the world is run by those that never listen to music anyway.” - Bob Dylan

I always thought this was insightful!

I do when I go walking all the time. The cop had no right to stop him or quesion him. If they did that to me, I would tell them to drop dead as would all red blooded Americans.

From an interview with the police officer and her likeness, I would say she was of so-called minority status. A kindly caring concerned public servant, who just wanted to help an old man. This she did.

An absolute credit to who ever trained her in public relations. As for Bob Dylan, he sure gets a pass on this one. Apart from a vile distorted hit job by the London Daily Mail this was:

Happy ending for all.

So what? I treated rock legend Rod Stewart like a complete unknown when his tour bus fueled up at a truck stop I worked at.

It's not that I didn't know who he was.....I just didn't care.

“More like YOU don’t. Someday when you get off your knees from the Dylan alter you should check them out”

Goodness gracious, you respond just like dem people over at DU, you can’t stand dissenting views.. I give Dylan’s view on politics the same consideration I give Sarah Palin’s views on music.

So now an unarmed, sight-seeing American citizen cannot walk down the street in public in the evening without having on his person state issued ID (once call “papers” in Nazi Germany and its occupied territories). If he cannot identify himself with the required papers, he’ll be involuntarily detained in a police vehicle and taken to a place where he can be identified by finding and presenting state issued ID to the police, or by satisfying them in some other way.

What part of this scenario conforms to the notion of “free country?” What part of it respects the fourth amendment to the U.S. Constitution? Why are ever increasing police powers — no knock raids, unlawful search and seizure (as in this case) — not generating a greater outcry from the American people?

Why? Because they’ve been tamed and subdued by Big Brother. The cops — not the citizens — rule the streets, and anyone who doesn’t like it must submit to the billyclub, or should I say, the taser.

Dylan’s constitutional rights were blatantly violated in this incident by kids with badges. That such kids had the power to do what they did should send a shudder down the spine of every freedom loving American.
