Sociologists have been telling us for years that Stalinism created an environment very like a tribe with a dominant male who has exclusive mating privileges. That kind of situation is unconducive to, and militates against, good fatherhood and family formation in men who aren't the Main Squeeze. The Roman Empire saw the same phenomenon: as soon as the Julio-Claudians established themselves as the alpha monkeys, all the other clans began to wither and die off, that had maintained themselves successfully through 500 years of the Republic. Indeed, the population of the Empire as a whole declined from the moment the Augustan principate was established and didn't begin to recover until the Middle Ages.
What the Russians need is a good, strong dose of James Madison and Patrick Henry testosterone, and a generation like the American Founders who exemplify freedom and good family values. Their alcoholism will disappear when they've got better things to do than drink.
