I think you are shooting from the hip, not thinking. Bush wanted Specter. He was needed at the time to get Roberts and Alito confirmed (yes, I know they hadn't been named yet, but the openings were coming up).
Had Santorum endorsed Toomey, I think you would be looking at Senator Hoeffel, which would have been much worse. PA was not about to elect Toomey.
I don't think that Santorum said anything negative about Bristol. He had to put into words what most parents really think. I think he was rather supportive of the family in his remarks.
You may call it shooting from the hip, but we are early in the history of what kind of 'judges' Roberts and Alito will be. Time will tell if there was 'wisdom' in throwing Toomey to the liberal wolves was the 'right' thing to do. Santorum used up his political capital by hooking up his boat to the liberal Spector one man kayak. Spector sure did repay that favor now didn't he?
There does come a time when the chaff has to be blown off the grains of the wheat and nobody can say yet that what Rove advised President Bush to do was in the best interest of this nation. Personally I prefer an unadulterated liberal than a play actor republican using the 'right' in this nation as their pinata.
