Arlen Specter faces fury: 'You work for us!'
Politico ^ | 8/11/09 | Andy Barr

Posted on 08/11/2009 10:46:03 AM PDT by Born Conservative

Sen. Arlen Specter (D-Pa.) fired back Tuesday at a raucous town hall audience that booed and jeered him for more than an hour.

Specter immediately tried to temper the rough crowd, which started booing him before the question-and-answer session even began, with the blunt warning: “If you want to stay in here, we’re not going to tolerate any demonstrations or booing. So, it’s up to you."

But minutes later during the senator’s response to a question on whether Americans would be able to maintain their private insurance under the Democratic health care proposal, a protester who was not selected to speak stood up, walked into the aisle and began shouting at him.

“Do you want to be led out of here?” the senator told the man, pointing at him. “You’re welcome to go.”

Specter then walked toward the heckler who was being pushed back toward his seat by another member of the crowd.

“Now wait a minute,” Specter shouted repeatedly into the microphone. “You want to leave? Leave.”

“I’m going to speak my mind before I leave, because your people told me I could,” the protester said once the room quieted down. “I called your office, and was told I could have the mike to speak. And then I was lied to because I came prepared to speak.”

The concept that he works for us must have come as a great shock to Sen. Sphincter.

Specter - “I’m encouraging constitutional rights. I’m encouraging constitutional rights by coming to Lebanon [Pa.] to talk to my constituents. I could be somewhere else. I don’t get [any] extra pay. I don’t have any requirement to be here.”

Wow! So Arlen must have taken a refresher course at the Joe Biden School of Public Speaking.

I'm amazed he's stayed in power for so long. I think his political instincts will be tested during his next election. If he doesn't run, it's because he's seen the writing on the wall...

Have you ever heard, in such a short period of time, a politician say such career-threatening things?

Speaking as a Pennsylvanian who has been to two of Arlen’s town halls in the last five years, I’ll have to say that one thing I used to really admire about Arlen was his willingness to deal with critics and face the music. That all seems to have changed now that he’s become a Democrat.

Imagine these people talking that way to an average caring citizen. What is this knuckle head thinking?

“...I could be somewhere else. I don’t get [any] extra pay. I don’t have any requirement to be here.”

Exactly what's wrong with the US government in 2009. The only thing that people like Spector excel at is BS’ing crowds, and he's obviously not even that good at that. How did they ever get the idea they are special? Elected office is not supposed to be about stature. It's supposed to be about service.

With regards his comment “I don't have any requirement to be here”, what exactly are the ‘requirements’ for a senator, or a congressman? What are they supposed to be doing to earn their pay? How many hours are they supposed to work? How much time is required that they spend in their own state or district? Seems like a very loose job description.

Actually, this is a misrepresentation of the townhall meeting. Specter was actually treated well despite disagreements—with only a few exceptions. I think some “news” agencies just like to portray conservatives as badly as possible. Not that he didn’t deserve to be yelled at—but most of the time, he wasn’t. Most questioners were respectful, articulate, and had read the bill. Unlike Specter.

That lady really burned him.

Cheers for her.

We need to pray that what these representatives are hearing will really sink in and that they’ll REALLY get the message; that this is mainstream America and this is how we really feel.

In his anger and frustration at not being able to control the script, Specter lets the mask slip and says what they all really think up on Capitol Hill. The arrogance to think that he should get extra pay for doing what he already gets paid to do, plus perks. He's paid to represent, and he can't represent what he doesn't know. Of course, none of them are there to represent Americans, they're there for personal power and ambition. I don't give a snap of my fingers for any of them. It's interesting to see one of them slip up and admit to their arrogance, though.

If THAT is the best he can do in defending himself (whatever his views) he has no business representing ANYBODY!

This man is incompetent and he is NOT alone. I DO NOT agree with “O’s” proposed plan, but I am certain I could have acquitted myself better than this guy did in the face of those kinds of challenges.

NONE of these ‘leaders’ has a true grasp of how abjectly poisonous their proposals are to the people they presume to represent.

Spector defended ira Einhorn who murdered a young girl and kept her body in his closet for 3 years.
Spector GUARANTEED Einhorns appearanceif only he could get bail. Well, guess what”
Einhorn fled the country and Spector couldn’t be found for comment.
So much for a lying politicians “ guarantee’.

Our so called representatives have become extremely arrogant, condescending and even more self-serving than they have ever been before in the entire history of our country.
