My daughter, completely psyched at having pulled a 589 on her Virginia History SOL, asked me to take her to the National Museum of American History (Smithsonian) yesterday.
Lo and behold, Helen Thomas was in the main lobby signing copies of her 'The Great White House Breakout' children's book.
There were no more than six or seven families in line. People were walking right past her either as if she didn't exist, or just throwing cursory glances her way. The lines to various exhibits, including The Star Spangled Banner, First Ladies Gowns, Lincoln "Americana" (Dorothy's slippers, Fonzies' jacket, etc) and even Julia Child's kitchen were much, MUCH longer.
Really warmed my heart to see how completely irrelevant she is to the general public (keep in mind that it's tourist season in DC).
