The cent sign that is no longer on the keyboard started out as a “c” with a vertical line through it. When penned it look more like a d.

If you are into construction the penny nail uses a d for penny. (d10 is a ten penny nail.) Penny = Cent.

You might be able to find more information on it somewhere on line.ALso interesting is the evoluction of p and f .......PH as in PHish.

Fascinating - what replaced the cent sign on keyboard? It seems like it was the number 6 - am I right?

Interesting corollary now that we're completely off-topic: they're called x-penny nails based on an old UK custom of selling them by the hundred: 16-penny nails were 16 pence per hundred. I didn't have to do with the length of the nail, but rather the weight.

They use the letter D as an abbreviation for the Roman coin "Denarius", a small (usually silver) coin that traces directly to pence.
