I have a hard time believing the Volvo got less than 19 MPG.

The 1990 Plymouth Voyager 3.0 liter 6 cylinder I use to own, wouldn't have qualified as I gets 19 MPG.

Take the car to the dealer on a flat bed. I have not heard that there are restrictions on cars that have no parts.

The car has to be in drivable condition. I assume that means that it must be road-worthy, having headlights and taillights, mufflers, wipers, mirrors, a seatbelt etc. Everything you need to avoid getting ticketed by a cop on the road. But you can probably strip the rest. Definitely take out the entertainment console and speakers, electric seats, swap out mag wheels for cheap wheels.

How is this going to help the economy? These cars were going to be traded in anyway pretty soon, and now they cant be resold. Instead of having two cars being sold, with money exchanging hands from the customer to the dealer, now only one car is sold. This is Nuts!

Another completely mindless, stupid, ignorant initiative from this assclown of a president. This program will only serve to:

1. inflate the cost of used cars that the poor rely on for tansportation.

2. jeopardize the used car parts supply chain

3. inflate the cost of used car parts

4. hurt lower income consumers

Even giving these cars away to people who are in need of basic transportion would be better for the economy than destroying the remainng value of these vehicles.

Most poor people cannot afford to purchase a new car even with this asnine $4500 incentive.

Kill babies, euthanize serniors, now euthanizing cars. This government is completely insane.

The 1987 T-Bird I *do* own doesn’t qualify either, as it gets 19MPG combined, and I noticed that the EPA even tried to rig the game by adjusting the highway mileage ***DOWN*** from the original 27MPG to 24MPG. Not that I would trade it in anyway, the only way Obama’s folks are crushing it will be after they first take possession of ~50k rounds of ammo...a round at a time.

This whole thing stinks to high heaven. It has nothing to do with reducing emissions and everything to do with paying the UAW back.

Anyone who is upset at this should pledge to NEVER, EVER, ..... EVER buy anything made by the UAW.

The EPA figure used is (highway+city)/2. In my recent shopping for a used car, I learned that the figures can differ by 10 or more mpg. Some city gas hogs are fairly decent on the highway.

I hope the people turning in these good “clunkers” have first looked at the private market. They might be able to get better in a private sale than what the gummit is paying.

Also why hasn’t the option been considered of letting the cars be fitted with smaller or more advanced engines to bring them out of clunker status? Throw away that old V8 if you must, but stick a decent V6 in there instead.

Yup, and I assure you my next vehicle won’t be. Of course, the way I drive my cars, that won’t be for a LONG time.

Imagine being a car insurance agent and getting 10-15 reminders of this every day. Truly makes me sick.

What’s the carbon footprint of this program? I know you can’t physically see it coming out of a tailpipe, but it takes energy to make a new car. I’m driving a 17 year old Explorer with almost 200k on it, working 50+ hours a week at a job over 30 miles from home, just so I can pay off my student loans and get on with life. Oh, and also apparently so the government can help the wealthy “go green” by trading up to a brand ... new ... car!

The focus of this program should have been the cars that can no longer pass emissions. If they had limited the program to cars that couldn’t pass emissions and had a blue book value below the cost to repair them, it might have helped get real clunkers off the road.

Then means test it and make it possible to use the money to buy a decent used car. I still wouldn’t have supported it, but it would have been defensible as a program to help working class and poor people get rid of dangerous, polluting old cars in favor of safer, cleaner vehicles.

This program is nothing but a welfare program for the middle class.

Our entire nation has been overrun by the radical left. Period. There is ZERO justification for this horseshit. This is all part of the great global warming swindle.

Obama is doing his best to turn us into a 3rd world country...When in the f-ck are we going to take this nation back?!?!?

Uh, I expect the agents are usually pleased because the customer will usually put collision and comprehensive coverage on a new car as opposed to a “clunker” which often goes only with liability.
