The article says that they put in some type of “liquid glass” which destroys the engine after you run it for awhile. It says that every single turned-in car must be destroyed.

One poster questioned why they couldn’t give these cars to the poor who have nothing, or to victims of natural disasters. Some of the “clunkers’ looked real nice.

The engine was immaculate. The body was perfect. Hell, the thing had wipers on the headlights!

What moron traded that car in for $4500?

It’s okay to kill cars, just don’t kill whales? Wait til the Obama Care is passed, and they’ll run the OLE people like this without oil til they fall. Gas Chambers, get them ready, we’ve got a destructive gov’t in POWER in Washington D.C.

In addition, a larger car which carries an entire family and car pooled friends will burn less gas than taking two or three smaller “green” cars to carry the same amount of family members to their destination.

I always wonder what the greenies expect families to do with their forth kid.

The United Auto Workers are happy and glad. They know that the price of JUNK will go up, and people will be forced to buy now from Government Motors.

The OP technically put this in the right categoy, but this needs to go in "News," or perhaps breaking.

It's a true scandal.

One of the main objectives of this program was to get gas guzzlers off the road, and replace them with more fuel efficient “green” vehicles. Based on a conservative estimate of an average 35% fuel efficiency improvement, “cash for clunkers” will reduce oil consumption in America by around 3.1 million barrels annually. Since we use about 20 million barrels a day, this represents a reduction in oil consumption of about 0.04% per year. And at a cost of $1 billion, that’s about $910 per barrel of oil not used.

The politicians that crafted this, and voted for it, should not just lose their jobs - they should be prosecuted for treason, and theft of public resources. And when they are found guilty, they should be summarily executed.

Well, we're seeing a government program, Cash For Clunkers, where liquid glass is poured into the engine to seize it up (kill it).

How long before we see movies of another government program, Obamacare, where seniors are given "medicine" to drink and permanently stop their sometimes unpleasant exhaust? Wouldn't surprise me that the socialist make it into a public sport, herd them into a stadium and sell tickets to raise money to pay for helthcare premiums of illegals.

I couldn't even watch the vid's getting to the seizing part. It made me sick. All those cars were nicer than any vehicle I've ever been able to afford. Except for my first corolla back in the day, and a chevy blazer when they were only $10,000 new I've always bought used cars. It really is sickening.

Those cars they are destroying would be so nice compared to some of the ones I see people in my area driving, the kind of people who work at car washes, sacking groceries, taco bells, and nursing home attendants.

This definitely is an attempt to stop all kinds of mechanics to have nothing to offer in repairs of used alternators, rebuilt enginges, etc. All parts will have to be brand new.

Not to mention places like Mass. where they give welfare people cars so they can get a job. They will have to have new cars to give them. They also pay for registrations and insurance.

What a waste of perfectly good parts, and more landfill to take care of. What a bunch of morons. Where is the motto of “recycle, reuse, rebuild” mantra. It must be a way for them to “profit” from the manufacturers thus make the government look like they were right to take over.

Now, many used car dealerships and employees will be out of business, and mechanics. I hope everyone, will try and run their cars for hundreds of thousands of miles, and quit buying new cars.

I could never participate in such a program. I have too much respect for good automobiles. It's literally a destruction of wealth and it defies all common sense. There is a free market parable about a glass maker who sees an increase in business when someone breaks all the windows in town. It might increase the business for the window maker, but it hurts my business because I have to pay to replace half a dozen bay windows and I have less money to buy tools, computer parts and office supplies.

Bastiat is also the author of the finest essay on opportunity cost ever written, "What Is Seen and What Is Not Seen." He begins with a parable: a boy breaks a window. What is the effect on society? The benefits seem to ripple out: the shop-owner pays the glass-maker to replace the window, the glass-maker in turn buys something else, and so on. But this analysis ignores "the unseen," what the shop-owner would have bought instead of replacing the window - perhaps a new pair of shoes. As Bastiat puts it:

There are not only two people, but three, in the little drama that I have presented. The one... represents the consumer, reduced by destruction to one enjoyment instead of two. The other, under the figure of the glazier, shows us the producer whose industry the accident encourages. The third is the shoe-maker... whose industry is correspondingly discouraged by the same cause. It is the third person who is always in the shadow, and who, personifying what is not seen, is an essential element of the problem. (1964b, p.4)

“These people are insane”

Why do you say that? Well lets see. They spent a billion dollars and charged it to us, destroyed a billion dollars worth of assets that belonged to us, reconsidered and are going to charge another 2 billion to us and destroy another 2 billion worth of assets that belonged to us, and all the while claim this program has created wealth!! Actually it’s much worse than that because once those new cars roll off the lot they depreciate 20% so add another 600 million for depreciation of assets. Could an insane person figure out how to spend 3 billion and in doing so actually destroy 6.6 billion in assets? I don’t think so. A better word is akin but STUPID works better!!

I would suggest that if you have to get a new car, you completely stip your old car of altenators, wipers, headlights, tail lights, radios, gaskets, mufflers, filters, exhaust systems, rims, tires, pumps, etc. Take the car to the dealer on a flat bed. I have not heard that there are restrictions on cars that have no parts.
