What is he hiding? I don’t know.

It is not necessarily something relating specifically to the Hawaiian birth certificate; I suspect Obama is taking a “crack in the dam” approach, such that if he shows a willingness to concede disclosing his original birth certificate, he fears a crack in the dam such that public pressure could build for him to come clean on all his records, including his college records.

My guess as to what might be behind his concealing his records?

First, we know from the Lolo Soetoro and Ann Dunham divorce papers that Barry was Lolo’s son. It’s so recited in the legal filing. That was in the late summer of 1980, so Barry was a rising sophomore in college and was STILL at that time Lolo Soetoro’s son.

How did that come about? I think when Ann and her children moved to Indonesia to be with her husband Lolo, that she and Lolo expected them to remain in Indonesia for the rest of their lives.

Lolo was back home; Ann was an anti-American marxist who believed in the inherent nobility and superiority of Third World cultures.

So I would expect that Lolo adopted Barry, if he had not already done so earlier when they were married in Hawaii, and that Barry, and perhaps Ann as well, became a naturalized citizen of Indonesia.

Now that does not mean Barry lost his US citizenship; he was not of the age of majority at the time and it is hard for a minor to renounce US citizenship. And it is not necessarily the case that the state of Hawaii vital records office was ever formally notified by anybody that Lolo had adopted Barry or that Barry had become an Indonesian citizen.

In the course of time, after a number of years, the marriage becomes less happy. And it is decided to send Barry to Hawaii to live with his grandparents. This was probably done for educational reasons, in that Ann thinks Barry could get a better education in Hawaii.

But legally he remained Lolo’s son and an Indonesian citizen.

So Barry goes through Punahou, focusing on basketball and partying.

When the time comes for college, Barry has limited choices available. This is not because Punahou is not an excellent school; it is. But Barry may well have done quite poorly on the SATs, and if his grades were less impressive, then even affirmative action might be insufficient to get him into a good college. The other stumbling block might be his white mother and white grandparents; college admissions officers might prefer to take affirmative action admissions from black families in economically deprived circumstances.

Nevertheless, I recall in those years how so many colleges were following the fad of “internationalization,” and it was commonplace for a university to brag about the international breadth of its matriculating students. In fact, it still is. The more exotic the country, the more interested the college would be in the student.

So Barry, with his Indonesian citizenship, was something of an exotic animal in 1979.

So I suspect that Barry matriculated to college at Occidental as an Indonesian citizen. He may have even qualified for some type of additional financial aid under an Occidental international student program.

The problem for Barry arises if he obtains naturalization as an Indonesion AFTER attaining the age of 18 years.

So I wonder if Barry didn’t, after turning 18, at some time in his college years, take some affirmative action to renew his Indonesian citizenship under Indonesion law.

The current provision of US law governing this is Title 8 of the U.S. Code, Section 1481. I haven’t looked back to see what any predecessor to this statute said in the 1979-1980s time period. But it currently provides that obtaining naturalization in a foreign state upon his own application after turning 18 will cause him to lose US citizenship. And if Indonesia does not permit dual citizenship, there can be no doubt that he intended to thereby lose his US citizenship.

But at the time, perhaps the more important benefit to Barry was being an Indonesian citizen.

Consider his admission to Columbia. Even with affirmative action, it is not clear that an African-American with (let’s assume) not impressive grades and (let’s assume) not impressive SAT scores could get into Columbia. But as an exotic Indonesian citizen, Columbia might be interested.

It is interesting to note that Barack seemed to hang around the muslim students when he first arrived at Columbia. Now, I don’t think he is a muslim, I think he worships at the Temple of Marx & Lenin. But if Columbia treated him as an Indonesian, then when he arrived he may have been naturally introduced to Indonesian and Muslim professors and fellow students.

I wonder if it may even have been the case that he entered Harvard Law as an Indonesian. This strikes me as less necessary, as I think African-American plus the critical Columbia degree, even with middling grades, might have been enough to get into Harvard in the early-to-mid 1980s.

But who knows? His records are all hidden.

Now, someone might be thinking, well surely some employee in the registrar’s office at Occidental or Columbia has taken a peek at his files, and noticed that he was listed as an Indonesian citizen, and would have spilled the beans.

To that I would say, not necessarily; the liberal-lefties have a stranglehold on places like Occidental and Columbia, and there may be no one with access to his records who has an interest in spilling the beans.

But, in the absence of the disclosure of the records, the foregoing is mere speculation.

IMO ".. the core issue of Obama: a lack of honesty and (his continual) deception at a fundamental level. Lying comes as naturally to Obama as caring did to Mother Teresa.
... I do not know if he is eligible to be President. I have not seen proof. Neither has anyone else - BOR’s & KOS claims to the contrary. ...
before certain people classify me as nirther or birther, save your breath: I am a skeptical, rational, and sober individual.
At the most Obama is ineligible. IMO, this is not a probability, but it is a possibility. At the very least, Obama is hiding something of lesser impact. Something that should have been addressed head on. ...
Something that might have been just embarrassing years ago has now become a great liability. He has a tar baby on his hands. He and his family have hidden things, perhaps destroyed records, and deflected for years. Now his handlers and the MSM are continuing the deflection.
When the record(s) do become public, which they will, further doubt will be cast upon our President. A hard core group will still believe in the Obama, but the middle will shift away.
To those who say we should concentrate on other issues such as health care and cap and tax; reminder, it is possible to chew gum and walk at the same time.

As Clinging Bitterly wrote, keep pushing, keep the pressure on. The Left would do it to us. Let us not disappoint them.

Great post. In my spy novel fantasy, brilliant Mossad agents infiltrate all of these institutions and uncover the dirt.

Darned well speculated, Sir John. Your theory tags up lucidly and rationally with the currently known facts, and I for one am hoping fervently that we’ll live to see it confirmed.

I concur with the "crack in the dam" approach. The problem for Obama is that there are already a few teeny cracks with the BC issue alone.

First crack - the original COLB shown on the internet. The White House press secretary has since called it legitimate. If the original records don't match that information, too late. They own it.

Second crack - the birth announcements in the two Hawaii papers at the time of his birth. Either they are real or a forgery. If they are real, the address shown in both papers is innacurate. Since the information came from Vital Statistics, the likelihood that both papers would print the same wrong address is, well, unlikely. This points to a possible fraudulent piece of information in his birth records. Are there more? If the announcements are fake, that's a probelm for whomoever faked them.

Third crack - the affirmation from the Dr. Fukino that she had seen his vital records and, that indeed, he was born in Hawaii. Now, I would think that the only person who could authorize her to release that information would be Obama himself. But.......she only said his record said he was born in Hawaii. Not, that the information was accurate. not whether it was a hospital birth (which I would think would be harder to falsify), or a home birth, or ?

Now if Obama authorized her to confirm verbally that he was born, why not authorize the release of additional information verbally? ....like the hospital?

Perhaps releasing this information would lead to further trails in finding out whether it was accurate or possibly fraudulent. If his BC says it was a home birth and attested to only by his mom, how many people who question his birth circumstances would be satisfied with that information?

I doubt we will ever see the original BC in Hawaii's Vital Statistics.
