True, but remember Sweden in 1994 carried out a reform of its social security system (old age pension scheme) mainly along the lines of ideas presented by CATO Institute.

Ping! Reminds me of our little Svedish leftist friend on Georgia Avenue; and also of our conversations about how New Zealand is also seeing the light and calling for slashed gubmit spending.

*sigh* Unfortunately, our BigGubmint spenders will just say 'New Zealand is such a tiny island. They don't have our problems so naturally they can slash and burn unnecessary programs'

Our elected Congresscritters will NEVER slash spending unless there is a powerful lobby that pays them to do so.

I think graft and corruption sort of stay in the halls of Congress, even when the players change, sort of like the smell of gym socks stays in the high school. Once they go there, even with the best of intentions, before not long they start to stink.

Actually living here in Stockholm, I can say this is a pretty dynamic city, especially comparing it to other European cities.

I think if they ever enacted tax cuts and weened their people off socialism--this place would explode with vitality.
