The ousted President of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya, has crossed the country's border with Nicaragua, fulfilling his vow to return home.
Mr Zelaya has been in exile for nearly a month after he was forced from his position by a coup, and has previously tried to return by plane.
The interim government has said it will arrest him if he sets foot in Honduras.
Earlier, soldiers fired tear gas at hundreds of Mr Zelaya's supporters who were waiting for him near the border.
Talks in Costa Rica aimed at resolving the political crisis collapsed two weeks ago with no agreement reached.
Television images, broadcast by Telesur, appeared to show Mr Zelaya, surrounded by supporters and journalists and talking into a mobile phone, crossing over the Nicaraguan border.
The BBC's Stephen Gibbs, in the Honduran frontier town of Los Manos, said the army had sealed all roads to the border several kilometres (miles) from the actual crossing point but hundreds of people had still gathered in the area.
When the military announced an 18-hour curfew, Mr Zelaya's supporters began throwing rocks at the soldiers, who responded with tear gas, says our correspondent.

thanks for the link
I am watching this on live TV. He put his foot over the border, then retreated back into Nicaragua, got in his car and gave an interview. Even Al Jazeera said, “There is a PR element to all this.” The Honduran military and police are right there, with an arrest warrant for him and a good supply of tear gas. He is not going to do anything that risks his rear. Zelaya: “I’m not doing this for myself”!!!
Now he appears to be standing around munching on a torta.
How soon before Nobama orders our military to “assist” Zelaya’s supporters in reinstating this two bit dictator?
But crossing the Rubicon, this ain't.
a torta sounds pretty good.
>How soon before Nobama orders our military to assist Zelayas supporters in reinstating this two bit dictator?
About 48 hours before he dies in a military coup...
haha....
That was SO brave... heh
I wouldn’t be surprised, but I seriously doubt our military would comply with such a clearly unconstitutional order (military being used for personal purposes, here to prop up a fellow marxist dictator wannabe). At the LEAST, a massive filing to show Constitutional authority for holding office (and hence giving deployment orders) would follow.
Can’t you imagine Julius Caesar riding up to the Rubicon, putting his toe in the water, retreating and munching on a torta, or the Roman equivalent thereof? Then giving an interview to radio Rome?
Obama: "This isn't about me."
I doubt he would do anything so explicit. That would take courage. However, I would watch out for anything more covert. What is the US Embassy staff doing? What aid and intelligence is he channeling to Zelaya? and so on.
He’s trying to start trouble. These type of leaders like to start trouble. We’ve seen it on tv for the last couple of days.
Hell breaks out briefly. People running around, gunshots, tear gas, helicopter flying overhead. Zelaya still in jeep bla-blando.
Someone nailed that windshield pretty square. Looks like maybe even two times.
Go Honduras!
Hokey Pokey Song
You put your right foot in,
You put your right foot out,
You put your right foot in
And you shake it all about.
You do the Hokey Pokey
And you turn yourself around, That's what it's all about.
Zelaya... What a little gutless smuck
0bama? Yes.
