Not only do they NOT compensate the referring physician, they would both lose their medical license if such a thing took place and they were caught... keepitreal you clearly have no clue about the rules and regulations each and every physician works under; even changing their address is a huge deal, there is even very stringent rules about what doctors are allowed to invest in without risk of censure by the government.... do you know who investigate a doctor if he is suspected of billing incorrectly? The FBI! Doctors have huge overheads, between the cost of staff — which has increased because of rules foisted on them by the government and out of control malpractice insurance costs — as much as 1/3 or in some cases even more, of the cost of what they have to charge a patient is the malpractice part of their fee...yet I didn’t hear Obama say LAWYERS shouldn’t be making a freaking profit tonight! Just doctors... people want to bring down the cost of healthcare — get the lawyers out of the equation.

You can also add that Doctors are not allowed to provide Pro Bono care. Medicaid is always a major loss for my wife and her partners. Pro Bono service, just like “lawyers” (including the tax benefits) are entitled to would do a great deal in helping balance the books.
