Don’t they usually show it from a different view so we can see the catch?

Usually, yes ... and also usually the 'first pitch(er)' comes up way shy of the plate when throwing it, as in the case of elderly former players and yes, politicians and Presidents, or entertainers, or whoever .. the catcher usually moves in to compensate for the short throw.

It looked like the catcher was in front of the plate. At the very least, he helped him out quite a bit.

That's normally how its done, (read above), but in the video clips that I've seen the catcher is out of the picture and all you see is Obama tossing the ball, which drops like a rock maybe halfway across .. must've hit the ground some 20 feet (at least) out from the plate.
