In his first decade in Congress, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) sought to convert his colleagues to his conservative beliefs through "gentle persuasion" and the sort of go-along-to-get-along collegiality that dominates Capitol Hill.
No more.
"I've found no one listens," DeMint said of his old approach during a recent interview with the Fix as part of our "Rising" series. "My role in the Senate is to come up with the right ideas and take them directly to the American people."
The leading edge of the more combative DeMint can be found in his new book -- titled "Saving Freedom" -- in which the South Carolina Republican castigates his Republican colleagues for "betraying the trust of the American people," and abandoning their core conservative principles in favor of "Democrat-lite" policies.
"I will go after Democrats and I will shame Republicans," promised DeMint.

Hunter/DeMint 2012.
Palin/DeMint 2012!
Hunter/DeMint 2012. Palin Sec of Energy.
Palin/DeMint 2012. Hunter Sec of Defense.
Anyone but “Zero” in 2012....
The most important job of President is CIC. Hunter is the best, bar none.
No, not anyone. Anyone who is a real conservative, perhaps.
You have a point.
DeMint is a great senator and would be superb on any ticket. So would Sarah Palin.
“The most important job of President is CIC. Hunter is the best, bar none.”
Amen to that!
Washington DC is playing out like Jerusalem in Chronicles I & II. Amid debauchery and corruption, a few prophets call for a return to common sense ways that work and obedience to God. They are ridiculed or worse, ignored.
See if you can guess what happens eventually.
I would love to see Demint run.
“Hunter/DeMint 2012. Palin Sec of Energy.
I like that lineup, along with John Bolton, SecState; and a retired Gen. Patreaus as SecDef.
Demint is no better at oration than Hunter. In fact he’s not as good. Hunter picked Huck instead of Mitt or McCain. He had no good choices, just as we didn’t.
Wouldn’t be surprised to see Sanford back in the thick of things by then, along with Palin.
I think I’d leave Petraeus in charge of Centcom and bring Tommy Franks in as SecDef.
I just can’t help but wistfully think how different today would be if, back on the VA Senate campaign trail, that fateful word “Macaca” had never been uttered.
I’m thinking he’s seriously thinking about it.
Agreed.
“Wouldnt be surprised to see Sanford back in the thick of things by then, along with Palin.”
Sanford’s toast. He knowingly betrayed his state’s and his wife’s trust. WAY too much of a risk.
