Blake Curd fears that Congress and industry lobbyists are using medical insurance reform to go after physician-owned hospitals.
"There are 110 physician-owned hospitals under development with about $5 billion at risk," said Dr. Curd, part owner of Sioux Falls (S.D.) Surgical Hospital. "They would employ about 27,000 at those 110 hospitals that the federal government appears intent on destroying."
Traditional hospital groups last week reached a deal with the Obama administration and Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., to reduce their Medicare and Medicaid payments by $155 billion over 10 years.
Sources say they are getting something in return. The deal would include provisions limiting physician-owned hospitals.
More than 200 physician-owned hospitals are in America. Some specialize in a few surgical procedures; others offer a full array of services.
"It seems to be the same as what we've seen in the bill in the House," said Molly Sandvig, executive director of the trade group Physician Hospitals of America.

If there isn’t a health care crisis, this will sure create one.
There wasn’t a credit crisis in the country... Until the Liberals created the conditions for one in 1998. Ten years later, credit crisis.
There wasn’t a health care crisis in the country... But if Liberals get their way with this, I can guarantee you in 5 to 10 years we will have one.
Thats the plan. Create a crisis and then let the government “solve it”
So...the plan is...create a crisis....fix it....revisit the crisis....find new crisis....fix it....revisit the old crisis....find bigger crisis...fix it...revisit the old big crisis...fix it. Over and over and over?
I don’t see any this working long-term. The media will be spinning because they can’t stay on top of each individual crisis.
PING
Haven’t you been paying attention?
Everything is a crisis. There is a healthcare crisis, there is an environmental crisis, there is an education crisis, there is a gun violence crisis blah blah... all of the crises are reasons we have ... what.. 23 unaccountable czars?
Expect to see a new crisis every week....
Its PromPTus
Sounds like it’s time to do a little outsourcing and move them offshore. Medical tourism is already taking off. Now it’ll really explode
~LOL~ interesting, some doctors started their own surgical outpatient clinic a few years ago; our hospital did everything they could to shut them down, even denying the doctors hospital privileges, were finally sued and lost... the vast majority of surgeries now go through our surgery center every day... and most big emergencies go to Las Vegas or down to Phoenix... in general no one I know in town really wants to have anything major at the local hospital.
