After being largely snubbed by the stimulus package and so far, the climate bill, T. Boone Pickens natural gas vehicle mantra (backed by a $58 million marketing campaign) looks like its finally starting to be heard on the Hill. This afternoon Sens. Harry Reid (Majority Leader), Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) said theyve introduced legislation called the Nat Gas Act aimed at encouraging the development and purchasing of natural gas vehicles (check out 10 Things You Should Know About Natural Gas Vehicles). Of course Pickens was there for the event and made a typically aggressive statement claiming that the legislation would do more to reduce our foreign oil dependency crisis than any other piece of legislation in the past 40 years.

Heres what the Nat Gas Act proposes to do:

There goes my heating bill through the roof.
I am so against this. I don’t know how I’m going to afford my heat if this idiot gets his way.
Had a cousin who worked for an oil company back in the 60s. This company gave NG away to it’s employees to fuel their vehicles. I see one thing that did not make the list of ‘10 things you should know...”. Acceleration sucks. His car was equipted to run on both NG and gasoline. When he needed to pass on the highway or accelerate to highway speed, he had to turn the engine off, switch to gasoline, and then restart the engine. Once he made the pass, it was turn the engine off, switch to NG, and then re-start the engine.
Of course, he could do this since his car was a gasoline vehicle modified to run on NG too.
Actually, this makes a ton more sense than electric cars. Providing, of course, that the Congress allows us to drill for natural gas to meet demand.
Maybe this will go the same way as his 2 billion dollar windmills.
Anyone know what the impact is on engine life? On emissions (sorry, but I do enjoy clean air)? On range?
Seems like natural gas in a car is approaching the danger level of hydrogen powered cars. If even close, I’d rather switch to hydrogen...
How it is transported? I know natural gas usually goes through pipelines, is that how it would be distributed into the cars?
We never "flipped the switch"...unless we were doing 60 mph on the Freeway..then it would sputter and kick..and sometimes die.
Had poor acceleration as you've described...but wasn't that big of a deal.
There’s only one problem. One has to *drill* to get natural gas. Then what to do with oil that comes with it.
Those silly libs.
Went busted on them thar windmills and now it is on to another loser program.
“Seems like natural gas in a car is approaching the danger level of hydrogen powered cars. If even close, Id rather switch to hydrogen...”
1. Hydrogen cannot be stored in metal tanks.
2. Hydrogen cannot be piped in.
3. Hydrogen production takes more energy to produce than it yields (poor energy storage medium).
4. Hydrogen causes engine metals to become brittle.
On the other hand, tons of city buses, not to mention fleet cars, already run on natural gas. It is a known commodity. The production of natural gas-powered cars is straight-forward, even if the tweaks (ie, the passing power situation) need some work.
Amen bro!
This was in FLORIDA !!!!!!!!!!
“I know natural gas usually goes through pipelines, is that how it would be distributed into the cars?”
They fill up a “propane tank” in the butt end of your car.
