The plan is to check their reaction, then if it’s anything like reasonable, get a keeper. I don’t want to be in the position of adopting one then having to send it back, or have all the cats decide to move out.

Talking about crazy dogs, I considered putting a service dog vest on my Lab so I could sneak her in places, but NOBODY would believe it . . . she's just a *little* rowdy. I refer to her as "Marley squared". Like the Border collies, she's purpose bred for a very active life, and without sufficient work she goes nuts.

I love to hijack threads. I always stay on “comments” so I react to the last reply, sometimes I never read the original thread (like now). I can tell you your cats are not going to react positively to a dog, especially the older cats but what the heck, dogs are cool. Get one.
