Ever read the part of NativeNewYorker's post where he said "right now"? Eisenhower was 50 years ago and was the hero of a popular, generation-defining war. Plus, it's worth pointing out, he was hardly a conservative champion. The guy basically was going to run for president one way or another and the Republicans gave him a better offer.
Please...I doubt if Ike would have ever considered the Dems. I'm certain that Douglas MacArthur never would have as he hated them! It was a prevailing culture during the military of the Great Depression, pre-WWII, that FDR's isolationism was basically rotting the U.S. ability to defend this country as war games in the 1930s actually featured soldiers with logs to simulate artillery and tanks. It was only after the events in Spain and the rise of technologically-advanced German and Italian mechanized war tools that sparked the Democrat-controlled Congress into finally appropriating money for basic research and development of planes, ships, tanks and new weaponry in the late 30s that saved us. As it was, we still were threatened with defeat early in the war as the Japanese zero was far superior to the Navy Wildcat or P40 Army Warhawk fighters not to mention the German BF-109 and Italian Macchi 202--one of the best in the war.
