Oh yes, he went there. Weve been having a running debate on Twitter this afternoon about Sarahcuda and my contention that criticism of her is verboten among righty blog readers, HAs included. This thread will be an interesting test case. Most of the heat Kraut takes will be for his contention that You cannot sustain a campaign of platitudes and clichés over a year and a half if youre running for the presidency. Didnt Captain Hopenchange do exactly that? Well, yes and no. Granted, the most memorable line he uttered in 18 months on the trail was Yes we can, but hes done countless policy interviews, debated Hillary 20 times and McCain three, and held numerous press conferences. The TOTUS jokes are fun but The Ones perfectly capable of straying off script when need be. Is Palin? She seems at ease when discussing energy or life issues but the jurys still out on most everything else, which is why Kraut feels comfortable asserting that she hasnt (yet) brushed up on national policy the way we all thought she would.

I completely disagree with your statement.
Wow, nice prose.
I lost any respect I had for Krautie when he seemed to switch to the Obama side during the waning days of the campaign and his statements right after the election in praise of the pretender-in-chief.
Kraut is one of the best. ANd he is right about Palin, absolutely right. She cannot win without schooling herself and she has to have more to say than what she did say.
I was not enamored of her during the campaign, she seemed like it was early in her career to be going for the big job. She seemed naive, said the same damn things every time she got up on stage and seemed lightweight to me.
The Palin people will now call me names, accuse me of being a rino or a dem, will declare I am immoral and probably supoprt killig babies.
But Kraut is on target here.
You'll need to go a ways further back than Safire, to find the originator of "nattering nabobs of negativity."
It was Spiro Agnew.
Yes, it was either Agnew or Nixon who said, but it was Safire (who was a White House speech writer at the time) who wrote it.
I’ve listened to Krauthammer over the last decade and have rarely disagreed with him. I happened to be home from work when Gov. Palin gave her initial speech after her selection as VP. It was was excellent. As much as I like Sarah Palin, she is not presidential material as I’ve seen no such excellence since. Conservatives need an awesome, knock your socks off candidate. I don’t see that in Gov. Palin.
agreed. She has to work and learn. ANd be substantial. And Kraut had good advice.
I agree with you. And the vicious, anti-intellectual stuff that starts around here whenever anybody dares to speak about it is more depressing than almost anything. If this is the base, we’re sunk.
Palin energised the base but she repelled independents. I think she hurt McCain overall. I know people who were skuspicious of Obama, didn’t want to vote for him but were terrified she would be president if McCain dropped off.
He hurt himself but she didn’t help him with voters we needed,,independents.
You are off base. Kraut went to medical school after he was paralyzed. He is an MD, a psychiatrist and not a psychologist. ANd the callouses on his hands from his wheel chair would not be seen because he is gone from the neck down.
How on earth can you say he has not worked.
He has worked harder thanl anybody here I would guess.
I don’t agree. There are many conservatives who don’t toe the line on your definition of moral issues.
Many are fiscal and security conservatives but are not what you want as a moral conservative.
Who in your mind is a great talent and is a ‘finished’ product?
I agree. Except when Ed goes after Ann Coulter or praises barracks speeches. What is with these women haters? Why does Sarah have to be so much better then every other person running? Most of them are idiots but they rip her.
Holding “values” is not the entire package to be president. A presidential contender has to be much more,,much more.
The Kool-Aid drinking session occurred at George Will's house on Tues, Jan. 13th. Looks like Kraut had his fill. But to his credit, he subsequently admitted his mistake and has been among Obama's harshest critics. He and I now just disagree on Palin and her viability as a candidate. ...and I suspect he'll eventually change his tune about her as well.
She need history,,a deep knowledge of our history and the history of the last century. She needs John Bolton and Condi and old hands who know foreign policy. And money.
I think the next election will depend on economics and foreign policy. A tall order for her and she lneeds to go at it full time for the next two years.
Folksy and religious and “one of us” is not going to work. We are going to need a good well grounded intelligent knowledgeable candidate.
