I'm sure most of them suspected that they were being played like fools. Once one of them let the cat out of the bag, they began to realized they didn't have to keep pretending.
These dingbats have probably gotten sick of seeing this abject mediocrity plod his way through one press conference after another by reading off a teleprompter, and they know they are now part of a national joke along with him.
