From what i can tell the main part of soccer is acting, they pretend something happen and they dive for the grass screaming like they are dying. What a disgrace

3 minutes of added time.

Many miracles have happened in stoppage time.

Come on :-)

Not really but we didn’t sub when we should have. Bradley knew how long altidore could go yet left him in too long.

Well.

Second in the confed cup.

Great semi against the Spanish. Shook Brazil in the final, before finally falling through..

I’d say the progress of American soccer continues. Good tournament, but in the end a deserved championship for the Brazilians.

Roll on the World Cup next year :-)

Looking at the Brazilians celebrating, it’s clearly obvious that they take it seriously enough. Lucio crying like a girl :-P

Too bad it ended like it did, but the USA gave a good account of itself. I feel much better now, looking forward to 2010. I think we'll do well.

Is it true that Tim Howard won first place in a Jason Taylor look-alike contest? And Jason Taylor came in second?

Brazil wakes up in the second half and wins 3-2.

Credit goes to Brazil who had much better control. Still it was a good game, just wish USA played it more tight with better control.

It was a much better played game than the recent Champions League final where Barcelona beat Manchester United 2-0, that’s for sure!

Just making the final is a great achievement. Now we need to do the same in next years World Cup!

GO USA!

The problem is that the US only ever has 2 goals a game. They never just run away with a total win.

1st half the boys were aggressive and attacking and after they got ahead 2 zip and after half they went in to defensive mode. Crappola.
1st half they played like Americans, 2nd half like scared of losing.
Brazilians are individually better than anyone. Americans played like a team in 1st half and did well.
2nd half Americans played like afraid to lose.

Sigh... If only the Freep headline at the moment matched the final score.

Well, they started out actually looking like a national team, and they managed to sustain it for almost an hour, so not bad.

The last half hour, they turned back into USA again: passing sucked, nobody uncovered when we had the ball, and using the center instead of the wings.

Well, shoulda been four-two Brazil, so they earned it. USA did take another step forward today, though.

Landon Donavan was all over the place. He’s really very good. Hopefully some of the younger guys continue to improve before next summer’s World Cup.

Exactly. It is a game that is the antithesis of what is (or, at least, what was once) the American spirit.

- Men endlessly running back and forth in what is almost always a futile attempt to accomplish a task.

- Arbitrary enforcement of the rules, in a system where favoritism is king.

- Men constantly attempting to gain something for nothing (by feigning injuries).

The mindset of the game is very much in keeping with the everyday lives of citizens in 3rd world and socialist/communist countries. Hence, it's appeal in such locales.

5 bucks says that Obama is a big soccer fan.

Sadly, there aren’t enough American born citizens to cheer on the USA anymore. How sad.

We love soccer, our kids played soccer and our family has seen three World Cups..........

Hopefully this will be a good tuneup for South Africa.

Of course, O has accepted an invitation to attend.....drat!

What recent games have you been watching? Those types of antics are illegal and severly frowned upon in modern-day soccer.

Diving, feigning injuries, etc. either gets you carded and/or you get the wrath of the players from the other team.

Soccer of today has an edict called "fair play", where if one player on a team is legitimately injured, the other team is compelled to stop play so that the injured person is administered to. If a team abuses this, and as you say, go down on the ground without any injury, that can lead to a serious confrontation, either on the field, and in some venues, in the stands.

Brazil scoring so early in the second half was the key, and it was just simply a tremendous shot, nothing you could do but just marvel at it. That’s Brazil. Now the US needs to learn how to play at top level for 90 minutes instead of a half.

At least we showed we can play with the best, now let’s see if we can finally win a game at Azteca. That’s when you know we will truly have arrived.

Well, don't be so fast throwing around the "communist/socialist" tag on soccer. If we're talking about the administration of soccer, it is the more "capitalist" than the American sports.

If you finish last place in baseball, basketball, or (American) football, what do you get? You get to pick the best players out of college or high school. What does the champion get? Nothing, except their rings. This is to promote "parity".

In soccer around the world, you finish last place, you get thrown out of the league you were playing in, and you have to play in the league below you until you can get promoted back to the big league. The champions in the soccer league can get any player they want, as long as they can pay him (i.e. no salary cap).

So which one system sounds more capatilist? You fail in soccer, you fail. You fail in an American sport, you get rewarded with top draft picks so as to "even the playing field". Heck, you have cases where teams are losing on purpose at the end of their season just to get top draft choices.

Imagine if they had these rules in, say, baseball? The Chicago Cubs would never be in the major leagues -- they would be mired in single 'A' ball forever.

Yeah, the NFL, MLB, and the NBA are run as cartels. A relative few become mega-millionaires. NCAA football fights having a playoff for a championship because they want to be able to vote on which teams get to play. They want to keep the big money flowing to the same few big schools, and they want to be able to steer the best players to those same schools.

I'd love to see a lower tier added to each of the big professional sports leagues. With a specific investment and a stadium of specific size, you could start a franchise. If you make the final four, you go to the big league, and the bottom four from the big league ends up in the lower division. It would sure make guys play harder at the end of the season.

Cartels aren't free enterprise.

I'd be the last person to defend the draft system of any American sport. I agree that the process for "leveling the playing field" has led to a homogeneity in professional sports in this country that, frankly, makes such sports less interesting. Professional basketball, in particular, is a complete bore IMHO.

But, as one who used to reluctantly watch soccer games with my foreign-born ex-girlfriend who loved the game, I found the games painfully aggravating. Don't get me wrong...it's a fine game for little children, and I myself played soccer as a kid. But, for the reasons I listed previously, I cannot for the life of me see how that sport can appeal to any adult.

In regard to the contention that dives in "modern day" soccer are frowned upon, I again respond with a haughty LOL!
