I think that, even with royalties on his past work, he had more going out (due to debts) then coming in. I don’t think he was financially solvent enough to retire.

I will never know why folks like this don't just retire and go live a simpler life.I don't either. But nobody ever seems to, so I just take it on faith that I wouldn't either, no matter how appealing that thought seems from where I stand now. It's the Spores episode of Star Trek. We're meant to toil and struggle. We atrophy and get bored if we don't.
