Argentine man said to have sent copies of messages to S.C. newspaper.
NEW YORK TIMES NEWS SERVICE
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina The mystery of who revealed Gov. Mark Sanfords e-mail messages might finally be solved.
A business associate of Sanfords Argentine mistress said Friday that private messages between the lovers had been sent anonymously to The State newspaper in December by an Argentine man the mistress briefly dated.
The associate, who asked not to be identified, is a Buenos Aires television executive involved in hiring the woman, whom he identified as Maria Belen Chapur, a producer at the television network America from 2001-02.
Last December, the executive said, Chapur was dating a young Argentine a few months after her affair with Sanford began. The executive, who has direct knowledge of the situation, said the man happened to see the e-mails between Sanford and Chapur and hacked into her e-mail account to see the rest.
Infuriated, the man sent the messages to The State.

Convenient. Foreign national. Out of jurisdiction.
Keep looking. It’s domestic and politically motivated, imho.
I call BS. It was far more likely a domestic variety hacker, of the demonrat persuasion.
What makes you so sure it’s one of the Rats? Sanford stirred up the RINO hornet nest by opposing the Obama-Pelosi-Reid porkulus.
We’ve just witnessed an object lesson in what happens when a RINO goes off the plantation.
I don’t even want to think about what they’ve got on Pandsey.
At least he didn’t just happen to have a cell phone scanner and just happen to have a tape recorder running and just happen to overheard compromising information on a republican politician while he just happened to be out for a drive with his old lady...
Oops. Hate it when that happens.
of the spousal persuasion
Snake though he may be, there’s more going on here than Sanford’s stupid affair.
It’s domestic alright, and scorned wife motivated.
Nothing else makes sense.
Nuts.
December. Hmmm, what was happening then? When did Sanford begin expressing resistance to strings attached to federal stimulus?
The wife knew in January, if the official account is to be believed. She was a very good friend of Hillary Clinton's in college, did you know that?
If Sandy did’t cheat on his wife and send the e-mails there wouldn’t be anything to publish.
What Sanford did to his wife and 4 sons is reprehensible
I doubt seriously that it was hacked. The state email service is run by a IT department, which likely has six to ten folks who handle the governor, the state senators and the state representatives email accounts. It takes one minute to open and capture the emails you need. Any member of the IT department could have done this....with no hacking. I’m pretty sure that both parties have an inside guy within the group and they get favors back on all of the emails they capture. If I were a state representative...the last place that I’d trust my digital chat...on the state-run system.
I mean I agree with you.
Sanford had the ear of the fiscal conservative wing and was getting good traction as a result of opposition to stimulus. He was beginning to tack rightward to appeal to social conservatives, too. Sounds like Presidential ambition to me, and some clearly thought he was Presidential material.
The Sanford I’d seen was not the Sanford we saw babbling his fool head off last Wednesday.
It’s all been rendered moot now, though. Between the moral failing putting off social conservatives, and the seeming dereliction of duty combined with junketing to meet his Argentine girlfriend on SC’s dime offending fiscal conservatives, he’s done.
This has caused damage to conservatives in general, and Republicans in particular. He’ll be lucky to remain in the Governorship to the end of his term.
And, this is coming from someone who vehemently defended the man, until he couldn’t be defended anymore.
That doesn’t change the distinct odor emanating from the whole episode, though. It all seems rather orchestrated. Laws have been broken.
