As a Personnel Manager for an industrial plant (70’s/80’s)it was not unusual to have a HS grad applicant unable to fill out an application form

Having recently been through a few hiring processes, I believe you.

Truthfully, I'm not sure what surprised me more...the number of resumes that were submitted with glaring grammatical errors / typos / etc....or the fact that the 100 or so I reviewed had been pre-screened already. And this was for white collar jobs - some Senior-level....not plant workers just out of HS.

My son - who WILL speak correct English, and communicate properly at the least, if not well .... is going to be at such a huge advantage over his peers that it scares me.

She didn’t know he was failing? Didn’t she ever receive any progress reports, report cards, attend parent teacher conferences or sit with him while he did homework?

I don’t care what motivation a person has, if you fail all through school to high school, you are not going to catch up. It is anyone’s guess if this kid can even read, let alone catch up enough to get the grades to stay on a team.

Last week our local paper ran a letter to the editor written by an elementary school teacher, who is also president of the county association of educators.
Her one paragraph letter was filled with incomplete sentences, spelling and punctuation errors. It was truly appalling as well as pretty much indecipherable. A few of my retired teacher friends said they were embarrassed to read it.

I have decided to copy her letter and give it to all my friends who home school. They can hand a copy to anyone who challenges their lack of “proper” credentials to educate their children.

True. But he is there now so short of kicking him out there is not much else they can do.

Surprised that the letter made it into the paper, unedited.

We had a lady on the city council who did much the same thing. I'd guess that she is illiterate, or nearly so. I think that the paper published her article - it was a "response" to something or other, don't remember what - in an unedited form just to stir the pot.

No Matter, she's also re-elected each term by a wide margin. If I ran in the district, I'd not show up in the vote count, and would likely be shot for my efforts to boot.

They can just let the guy stumble the rest of the way through school. Odds are he will soon stop going at all and they can spend money chasing him down under the useless truancy laws we have in the US.

The editor printed it as written but put [sic] after each error.
I have no doubt he was trying to make a point. He has written numerous editorials about what passes for education in this county. It is one of the worst in NC and we spend more money per student per year than many of the higher ranking systems.
Ignoring what would best benefit the black community, a decent education, we have black activists demanding a new swimming pool and that the Confederate Memorial be removed from the park. Both will cost money we do not have.

If he’s 6’5” and 250 pounds, I’m sure they’d love to have him on the football team.

Do they even play football in Massachusetts?

Sorry, if you don’t make the grades, you repeat the grade. If you cannot make the grades, then some alternative education is required. Promoting socially, NOT acceptable. This is why my kids went to private school - never mind the damage to my budget and the multiple jobs I worked. Its paid off too.

I can’t believe this Mom was so uninvolved as to not notice that her child was making straight “F’s”. Posters are correct that this boy will have a very hard time in the real world.

LOL! Good question! They used to. Not even sure if they do anymore.

How do you make straight F’s? What about gym or art or other electives. I taught an elective class at a middle school and we couldn’t fail anybody. Worst grade we could give was a C.

But yes, most “socially promoted” kids, even if they do have some brains, aren’t going to be prepared for a work environment where they are actually expected to produce.

There's always 'community organizer', 'local drug dealer', and 'Americorps'.

Where was the home follow-up?

It is unlikely she saw much of 'dumbassey' at home. I have a feeling he hangs out somewhere else.

And school ISN'T one of the places he hung out.

All F's usually indicates you didn't even attend class.

Notice this 'mother' was more worried about her son being able to 'walk' on stage like the other kids, and not whether he could even read his own graduation announcement.

Hey, that sounds a whole lot like “parenting” and last I heard, we turned that over to the state-run schools years ago. /sarc

“There’s always ‘community organizer’, ‘local drug dealer’, and ‘Americorps’.”

Apparently, “President of the United States” can be added to that list, NOW!
