The moderate Iranian leader who says that he was robbed of victory in last weeks presidential election faces a fateful choice today: support the regime or be cast out.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Irans Supreme Leader, has told Mir Hossein Mousavi to stand beside him as he uses Friday prayers at Tehran University to call for national unity. An army of Basiji Islamic volunteer militiamen is also expected to be bussed in to support the Supreme Leader.
The demand was made at a meeting this week with representatives of all three candidates who claim that the poll was rigged, and it puts Mr Mousavi on the spot. He has become the figurehead of a popular movement that is mounting huge demonstrations daily against the theft of last Fridays election by President Ahmadinejad, the ayatollahs protégé.
Mr Mousavi, 67, is a creature of the political Establishment a former revolutionary and prime minister who would like to liberalise Iranian politics but has never challenged the system in the way his followers are doing. It was unclear last night what he would do or even whether the protests would die away if he backed down. Yesterday tens of thousands of demonstrators packed into the Imam Khomeini Square in Tehran named after the founder of the Islamic Republic for another massive rally, this one to mourn protesters killed in Mondays clashes with pro-government militias.

This is why I don’t care about what’s going on in Iran: it doesn’t matter if Ahmadinejad or Mousavi wins, because the mullahs are still in control.
Let’s see some mullahs swinging from lampposts. That will be real revolution.
fyi
Maybe Khamenei tells Mousavi that he won the vote, but he lost the election, so shut up!
Could get bloody!
Cast out?
I’m beginning to think this is the real deal -and that’s scary for the Iranians in the streets.
Godspeed to all those who fight for freedom..
Maybe they’re thinking of exiling him to Paris. Of course, that didn’t work out so well 30 years ago...
I believe it was Michael Ledeen who said on an interview, that Mousavi has only two options left to him now,
Get enough people behind him to pull this off.....
or die.
Yeah, but enough popular anger has been put into motion that it might end up challenging the mullah's control of the country.
Is it going to be like Surivor? “I’m sorry, Mir, the tribe has spoken”
Is it like the Garden of Eden? Will there be some angel with a flaming sword east of Tehran?
The people are telling Khamenei to tow the line or be cast out.
So the slaves are fighting over the scraps off the tyrants table instead of going after the tyrants themselves...
How every tyrant keeps themselves in power...
I’ll believe it when I see it.
Mousavi CAN'T make nice at this point. It's gone too far. There's too much bad blood regarding the Basijis. The pro-Ahmadinejad faction among the mullahs is scared.
If this quiets down, the rebel leadership will be quietly "disappeared" at leisure.
Me too, but that is the main hope for me. The young folks have got to be getting sick of the mullahs.
The mullahs and the Revolutionary Guard run Iran for their own profit. They don't want to give up the sweet deal they have. But the people are getting fed up over being poor so that the ruling elite can stay rich, and it's past the boiling point -- something for us to study, with the way DC has been pissing away our wealth and future.
