The Basij (literally "Mobilization") — also Bassij or Baseej, or Persian: بسيج; also Baseej-e Mostaz'afin, (literally "Mobilization of the Oppressed);" and officially Nirouye Moqavemate Basij ("Basij Resistance Force")[1] Persian: نیروی مقاومت بسیج — is the largest student union in Iran and a volunteer-based Iranian paramilitary force founded by the order of the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini on November 1979. The Basij are subordinate to, and receive their orders from, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.

Are they willing to kill as many of their countrymen as it takes? If they are convinced that those protesting are protesting against Allah instead of the government, they might be more than happy to hunt everyone of the protesters down and kill them. Automatic weapons, when used properly can be an incredible crowd deterrent...

A Canadian journalist was mistakenly arrested for being a protester and badly mistreated before his release. They are not allowed to take photos right now but many are using their cell phones to take pictures and video.
