Russia could scrap nuclear arms alongside other nations - Putin

MOSCOW, June 10 (RIA Novosti) - Russia could abandon nuclear weapons if other nuclear powers - official and unofficial - scrap them, the Russian prime minister said on Wednesday.

Asked by German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier if he believed Russia could be secure without nuclear weapons, Vladimir Putin said: "You bet."

"Why do we need nuclear weapons?" he said. "Did we invent them or did we ever use them? If those who made the atomic bomb and used it are ready to abandon it, and if, as I hope, other powers that possess them [weapons] officially or unofficially are ready to do the same, we will heartily welcome and promote this process."

He added that Germany could make a valuable contribution to the process.

The official "nuclear club" comprises Russia, the United States, China, Britain and France, but Pakistan and India also possess nuclear weapons and North Korea conducted its second nuclear test on May 25.

In addition, Israel is widely suspected to have a nuclear arsenal.

Freedom won out a decade and a half ago, but the Clinton’s stoogery allowed China, NK and now the MidEast to accrue all the missile tech that was once only that of Russia and Europe.

The article says...

The official “nuclear club” comprises Russia, the United States, China, Britain and France, but Pakistan and India also possess nuclear weapons and North Korea conducted its second nuclear test on May 25.

In addition, Israel is widely suspected to have a nuclear arsenal.

This “widely suspected” is beyond that. It’s a fact that Israel has them. All the governments dealing with nuclear weapons knows this.

In addition, it is said that Saudi Arabia has them, too. Now, that is “suspected”. Along with that, of course you can add Iran and North Korea. And you might have been able to add Syria in there soon, if it weren’t for the Israelis bombing that plant in Syria last year (or was it the year before, can’t remember). No one is talking officially about that bombing of the Syrian nuclear facility, by Israel.

I would say, “Fat chance” in getting rid of these nuclear weapons...

In fact, the Bible seems to indicate that Damascus, in Syria is wiped out by nuclear weapons — which I can only think of Israel as being the cause of it.

Never happen. Considering the poor shape of the Russian military, nukes are the only deterrent they have.

They lost count of what they had when the old Union fell apart. I would have absolutely no confidence if they ever announced that they were “totally disarmed”. Their empire spanned twelve time zones at one time, it would take an awfully long time to verify such a claim and I doubt it could be done.

China needs "growing room" for its billion plus population. Russia has a long border separating China from vast areas with untold reserves of natural resources and virtually no people to speak of. And Russia is going to give up their nukes? Tell me a story before I go to bed!

Regards,
GtG
