"I think gas prices going up is what started this whole recession,"That's the problem... most "little people" get all their information from WH soundbites and are way off base.
I guess "hoping" is way easier than "doing" something about it...

If our currency - the USD - wasn’t dropping so fast oil wouldn’t be increasing so much. If you were buying your oil in EUR or GBP or CAD, the cost would be up 2%, not 20%...
Welcome to one of the effects of a devalued dollar - higher prices for global commodities!

Blue state voters wanted no coal, no drilling, no nuclear as sources of energy.
What did they expect ?

Onanda is a great site. Over the last 5 months or so, the EURO has gained about 16% against the USD... So when oil goes up 16% for us, it's held even for Europe. Note too, that a 15% increase in the DJIA is actually 1% LOSS if you use Euros for valuation! The DJIA is up in USD, but down in EUR and GBP.

The islands used to be a leading supplier of sugar cane. I believe Maui is the only island currently still harvesting sugar cane commercially and supplies about 1/3 of the world sugar. The plant on Maui also reuses the cane husk and converts it for its own electrical needs, so the plant is self sufficient. The climate is also perfect for ethanol run vehicles, doesnt get very cold in the winter so ethanol will not thicken.
If Hawaii really wanted to eliminate unemployment they should go with both feet back into sugar cane harvesting and stop with the tilling of farm land for tourist bungalows.
Isnt mentioned in the article is that the Islands have government controlled pricing on gas. They set the price to prevent shortages.
