After months of training, he was assigned to the 323rd Bomb Group of the 9th Air Force as a bombardier/navigator on a B-23. He took part in the D-Day landing, with subsequent missions taking him to Reims, Chartres, the Belgian border and, in May 1945, Valenciennes. I don't think so. There were less than 40 P-23s built, it was inferior to its contemporaries, and it was never used overseas as a bomber (some may have been used under a different designation as transports).
