Deep Cuts Could Reshape California
By JENNIFER STEINHAUER May 30, 2009
LOS ANGELES Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger did not get the election results he sought. Now he seems determined to show California voters the consequences.
Rich Pedroncelli/Associated Press
In a special election on May 19, voters rejected a batch of measures on increasing taxes, borrowing funds and reapportioning state money that were designed to close a multibillion-dollar budget gap.
The cuts Mr. Schwarzenegger has proposed to make up the difference, if enacted by the Legislature, would turn California into a place that in some ways would be unrecognizable in modern America: poor children would have no health insurance, prisoners would be released by the thousands and state parks would be closed.
Nearly all of the billions of dollars in cuts the administration has proposed would affect programs for poor Californians, although prisons and schools would take hits, as well.
Government doesnt provide services to rich people, Mike Genest, the states finance director, said on a conference call with reporters on Friday. It doesnt even really provide services to the middle class. He added: You have to cut where the money is.
In less than two weeks, the administration has gone from warning residents that a vote against the budget measures would send the state some $24 billion in the red into utter turmoil to sanguine acceptance that the people have spoken and that the government must move on.

Just deport the illegals back to where they came from. A lot of your problem would be solved; especially since Mexico has decided to give free health care.
The CA legislature is impossibly left-wing with hundreds of legislative staff many of whom draw six-figure incomes. The Speaker (a former South LA community activist) has over 200 staff members!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just check her website Karen Bass and every socialist group from NARAL to Planned Parenthood to GLBT have their links.
I am with you, the silence is stunning.
Government to citizen: Take that! Don’t you realize how important we are
Is it called Aztlan?
Just denying services to them will help get them to leave. If we refuse to stop the handouts they will never have incentive to go back home.
yes, a good start is the cut anyone working for government with 6 figures salary, then reduce it to 5, then to 4. Anyone working for government should not be there to get rich
As for fire protection for this state, it is needed ONLY because we have environmentalists who do not allow clear cutting or anything remotely resembling common sense when it comes to true “fire protection”. They would rather SPEND money on firefighters when the inevitable happens, not clear cut or remove a precious tree!!!
I hope so.
At this point, California may as well pull over, hand the keys to Mexico, and let them drive.
I grew up in Southern California. While I miss it, I'll never go back. The place is consuming itself. Maybe the land was just always meant to be a poorly administered backwater of Mexico.
They can cut wherever they want to.
But leave the citizens labor ALONE!
We won’t be slaves to lousy, incompetent, left-wing politicians in Sacramento.
The public sector needs cutbacks.
They can play their little “Fine, we’ll cut things that will hurt you...” game all they want.
Bring it on, commies!
My friend, there are at least a thousand Boards, Commissions, Directories and Committies that could be done away with. Most, well some anyway are the same as the Federals. I can name two right now, CALIFORNIA COASTAL COMMISSION, CAL-OSHA. (Sorry for the rant). If someone could just come up with the total cost of each of these items and present them then we all could see where the cuts should be made.
Semper Fi, and the very best to you and yours.

The end of socialistic programs is a good thing.
Why all the stressing by this media person?
100% on point. Boards, Commissions, Committees are the vehicles of choice for Socialism
No jobs too.
Dear Boucheau!
The Speaker’s Staff has over 200 employees with all the perks and power. There are scores of boards, commissions and committees funded either by general revenues or by dues from members. All this has to go. But CA does not need a bicameral full-time legislature. A part-time unicameral legislature and the scrapping of nearly all boards, panels and committees is a good start.
Proving once again - in dramatic format - that you just cannot simply give people houses, healthcare, and money.
No, the "rich people" and the "middle class" are just the people who pay for everything.
Not at all. The problem for Arnold and the rats is that the "rich people" and the "middle class" who pay all the taxes aren't the slightest bit scared. Why should they be?

My guess.. No.
