WW2 was fought at a time when most Americans loved their country. It was fought by men who did not have to be more afraid of lawyers than the enemy. It was fought by men who had studied Sun Tzu and had a keen understanding that you fight to win and you do not offer appeasement instead of the point of a sword. It was fought through the will of the commanders in the field and not the politicians sitting in the safety of a debating hall.

In 1942 the US Congress registered is dissatifaction with the war effort by shutting down production of 155 howitzer amunition. Too much, they said, had been shipped to North Africa. They wanted the ammunition removed from North Africa rather than leaving it behind.

In the midst of war, ammunition production in the US was cut back.

During this lull, engineers normally used to check quality turned their efforts to the airburst fuze. When artillery ammunition production was resumed, it was with the mass production of this fuze in 1944, and was released for service for the Ardennes offensive. US artillery, always highly effective, became overwhelming. Small groups of US forces (such as the 101st Airborne at Bastogne) were able to hold off entire german armies. The 48th Armored Rifle battalion of the 7th Armored and 40th Armor held off a Corps at Vielsalm for 3 days.
