I have never in my life seen a more idiotic person.

Please note:

This “pastor” was attempting to cross the border. He was not “stopped” by the police; he was crossing the checkpoint. Supposedly, their dog detected something. I don’t care whether the driver didn’t see the sign. Hey, sometimes I imagine the dog can be plain wrong. Maybe at the last 7-11 a bum wiped his pot-soaked fingers on the tire?

The only point is that the police actually have every right to search the car. Their job is to check cars crossing the border.

Don’t try to go to Mexico, and they don’t need to inspect your car. Get out of the damned car, and they don’t have to force you out. Roll down the window, and they don’t have to break it in. Do either, and they don’t need to taser a guy who is clearly acting like someone trying to do something criminal and is resisting arrest.

This pastor got everything he deserves.

After watching, and reading, most of what has been posted on this incident, I couldn’t agree with you more.

One thing that keeps coming up, in my mind, is that the pastor says he has the right to travel within the united states without unwarranted search and seizure. I agree with him there. However, he is, by all accounts, crossing the border. Why, otherwise, is he at a “checkpoint” at the border?

Is this a contradiction within the story, or is it just me?

This wasn't at the border, it is my understanding these checkpoints have been set up 100 miles at points within the border, he was merely traveling to destinations within the U.S and was wondering why he was being detained without cause.

The checkpoints are set up on the highways well aways from the border. you don’t even have to be going to the border to be stopped and checked.
I’ve been stopped and checked by dogs and a cursory search of my trunk on a number of occasions, but usually they just ask if you and any other occupants of your vehicle are American Citizens and if the answer is yes they wave you on through.
Something aroused the Agents’ suspician here. I have BP Agents in my family and I know they just don’t go around beating up Americans (or illegals for that matter) just for kicks.
They, like any of us can be provoked, however.
Since Ramos and Compean, these guys have been walking on their tip toes.

False

This pastor was at an internal checkpoint miles from the border.

Police never have a "right" to search anyone's car. They may have a duty to search a car if they have a warrant or have established probable cause.
