The chairman of the Republican Party says the GOP is open to supporting pro-abortion rights candidates.
Appearing Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press," the head of the Republican National Committee responded to a question from moderator David Gregeory about the viability of a GOP politician who isn't strictly anti-abortion.
"We've had wonderful pro, pro-choice candidates," Steele said. "[Former] Governor Christie Todd Whitman [of New Jersey], for example, was a very successful Republican governor. ...
"I look forward to working to build a strong pro-life coalition within the Democratic Party since that's -- this is the direction the president wants to go."

The big tent includes the producers of who? All that is wrong with this civilization.
Civilization cannot survive with twelve-year-olds having babies, fifteen-year-olds shooting one another, seventeen-year-olds dying of AIDS, and eighteen-year-olds graduating with diplomas they cannot read.
what hypocrisy?
Why don't you just become a Democrat? Their tent is so big in can hold most every kind of deviant known to mankind.
I said this morning that Steele’s refusal to endorse Crist in the primary is the first smart thing he’s said since he was appointed to this job.
This guy is A TOTAL LOSER. HE IS AN IDIOT. HE HAS NO PRINCIPLES AND NO POLITICAL SENSE.
The party is badly in need of pulling up its socks and getting ready for the next election, and he is NOT the man to do it.
He is a JERK. He must have an IQ of about 70.
He is going to face some pain because of this and I feel bad for him. I don’t believe he is a Rhino but for some reason he is acting like one. He should have replied at a minimum that while he does not expect every candidate to take up the banner of pro-life as the central issue that there is no room for the kind of pro-choice attitudes that have as a goal the expanding abortion, the abridging of parental consent, and forcing doctors to perform abortions. I don’t think a conservative third party is necessary. The vast majority of people that vote for the GOP are conservative we represent a clear super majority in the party we merely need to make sure our candidates are well funded and route money around the national organization until they get the message. Also there is a lot we can do at the state level. Show up at the state party conventions and get involved.
Stand on the party’s platform or don’t run on it....
It's so big that it encompasses the Democrat Party, Meghan McCain, and then some.
*sigh*
With "leaders" like this, we are cooked!
Why should I give a dime to a Party which supports infant murder? I may as well support the Democrats and get some really effective cross-generational murder schemes for my money!
Can anyone tell me what this means? What party is Steele in?
There is nothing big tent about Abortion on demand.
Haley Barbour was the last EFFECTIVE RNC Chairman. Beginning with Jim Nicholson, it’s been a race to minority status.
IMO.
Steele seems to be saying, “To hell with the majority Pro Life Americans right now, ‘cause where else they gonna go; instead let’s schmooze the minority Pro Abortion people.”
I don't think he can find his rear end with both hands, much less beat the marxists.
And even odder, were this true how would it help to boost pro-aborts in the GOP?
Big tent gained us President Obama.
I recall so many FReepers were nearly orgasmic when he became chairman.
I'd rather get back in power and be in a position to effect our positions than to be an out of power ideologue.
Especially, if that pro-abort is a libertarian who is going to cut federal funding to abortionists like Planned Parenthood.
