The chairman of the Republican Party says the GOP is open to supporting pro-abortion rights candidates.

Appearing Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press," the head of the Republican National Committee responded to a question from moderator David Gregeory about the viability of a GOP politician who isn't strictly anti-abortion.

"We've had wonderful pro, pro-choice candidates," Steele said. "[Former] Governor Christie Todd Whitman [of New Jersey], for example, was a very successful Republican governor. ...

"I look forward to working to build a strong pro-life coalition within the Democratic Party since that's -- this is the direction the president wants to go."

You don’t win hearts and mind by acting morally superior and that anyone who is prochoice is evil/garbage/dirt bags that you don’t want to associate with.

When did pro-lifers or Republican candidates who are pro-life call those who support abortion dirt-bags?

Pro-lifers have always taken the high road on the abortion issue - it is the pro-abortionists who call us "anti-choice" or "anti-abortion extremists" or some other garbage.

Being pro-life is really the bedrock of a conservative, and by extension a Republican.

You can’t be this pro Giuliani and be a New Yorker. At any rate you need to read the Giuliani truth files:

He’s as liberal as Hillary Clinton.

>> I want to WIN the next election and support Steele.Big Tent is what’s needed.

It’s a calculation and regarding abortion, the goal is to have the fewest possible. Delivering the message of big tent unity with the provisions of Pro-Life requires mastery of statesmanship that I’m not confident Chairman Steele possesses.

I think Steel’s hands are tied by the party elite that fear for their positions. Has he compromised his beliefs..possibly.

Who would you suggest as a replacement?

I’m not a New Yorker but I do have respect for Giuliani. He doesn’t go around whining “I’m a moderate look how nice I am” like so many of the sickening little twerps do. He is a fiscal conservative and I would not be upset if he were elected. I’ll take a look at the link though.

Steele is right. Abortion is way down on the list when most consider who to vote for. You don’t win hearts and mind by acting morally superior and that anyone who is prochoice is evil/garbage/dirt bags that you don’t want to associate with.

While I have no doubt there are those who match your description, why do you think anyone who is pro-life is "acting morally superior" and that they also think all prochoice advocates are "evil/garbage/dirt bags that you don’t want to associate with."?

I've seen this type of rhetoric recently. I think the quote went something like: "So it’s not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

Honestly, I don't think you are an evil/garbage/dirtbag, I think you are ignorant of facts and perhaps also logic impaired.

Don’t laugh, but Ron Paul would have been an excellent RNC Chairman.

Strong thinks he’s going to follow Obama into the White House. Now that One has been elected, some people think it will be theirs from here on out.

You are very brave to post such an opinion here.

The truth is, there are many anti-government, anti-tax, capitalist, pro-military states-right advocates who do not consider abortion as a political issue.

And there are many (most?) on this forum who would throw these babies out with the bath water.

Point of clarification: my prior post was written as if you are pro choice. You may or may not be. Rest assured that my questioning of your reasoning and grasp of facts is unchanged even if you are pro life but think that it is essential that pro choice voters be attracted to vote rino.

That is what I don’t get. You never hear the Democrats even when they are “reaching out” talk this way. They just don’t.

I may have to think about that one. (no way I would laugh)

I think that Paul had some excellent economic philosophy, his foreign policy was worrisome to me.

Since I propose appealing to the younger voters, where our future lies, would that be a good choice for the “face of the RNC”? Beats me.

(I am no youngster, btw.)

Thanks for helping my point along. Voters shouldn't have to feel "brave" for voting Republican. We should make that as easy a choice as possible. Certainly we can win values voters without turning away those mostly concerned with their wallet.

Pro-Choice Moderates (title)

We don’t believe there is any such thing, if pro-choice means official government approval of people murdering babies. These are just liberals or worse, regardless of how they describe their economics.

Those in the party elite who fear for their positions ought to be put out of their positions, and replaced with conservatives.
