Official: Israeli PM (Netanyahu) likely to back two-state plan

JERUSALEM – Israel's defense minister said Saturday he believes Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will endorse the creation of a Palestinian state during his upcoming meeting with President Barack Obama in Washington.

It would be a significant shift for the Israeli leader, who has made clear in the past that he does not think the Palestinians are ready to rule themselves. But that position has put him at odds with long-standing U.S. policy that supports Palestinian statehood as the cornerstone of Mideast peace efforts.

"I think and believe that Netanyahu will tell Obama this government is prepared to go for a political process that will result in two nations living side by side in peace and mutual respect," Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak told Channel 2 TV on Saturday.

Barak said he thought an agreement with the Palestinians could be achieved within three years.

Gee, I just got through reading the opposite on FR on another thread, which tells me that any speculation is just folly at this point.

********

I really think this is more a case of Barak attributing to Netanyahu his own hopes. Or possibly, it’s Barak providing cover for Netanyahu by intimating Netanyhu was originally willing to talk about a 2 state solution but ultimately he found zer0’s additional demands untenable. I haven’t heard anything from Netanyahu which would indicate he’s open to a 2 state solution.

Let me play the part of Bibi: “ Now we all know that Israel is a very small country yet surrounded by many giant Arab countries. Therefor I am all for a Palestinian state as long as it is in Egypt or Saudi Arabia, or Jordan, or Syria. You folks know that most Palestinians are Arab and that they hate the Jews so YES I will support their state on Arab land.”

It is simpler than that. The Palestinian state was called Trans-Jordan, later shortened to Jordan. That was the portion of the original Israeli state that was split to accomodate the Arabs.

Unlikely. If he does it’s gameover. What was he elected for, to be Livni Lite?
Doesn’t sound like him, unless he is going to say, put it on Arab land and we’re ok with it.

False AP headline. Real quote buried. Disinformation.

“Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said he thought an agreement with the Palestinians could be achieved within three years.

“I think and believe that Netanyahu will tell Obama this government is prepared to go for a political process that will result in two peoples living side by side in peace and mutual respect,” Barak told Channel 2 TV.

However, he did not use the word state, leaving open other options for Netanyahu.”
