Is it true that is the first time a Pope has been welcomed to scene of Christs birth and crucifiction in almost 50 years? No. Pope John Paul II made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in the year 2000. However, Benedict XVI is only the 3rd pope to visit these holy sites, the other one was Pope Paul VI.
