US President Barack Obama has changed his mind and will now attempt to block the publication of photographs showing the abuse of prisoners by US soldiers.
The US government had previously said it would not fight a court ruling ordering the release of the pictures.
Mr Obama now believes the release of the photos would make the job of US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan more difficult, White House officials said.
The pictures were due to be released by 28 May, according to the court ruling.

I wonder what his position is on the public airing of photos of babies abused, tortured, and aborted with his cooperation and support?
He will “attempt” to stop the release. That’s like Willie Wonka “attempting” to save the fat boy from falling into the chocolate. “No, please stop” whispered so nobody could hear him.
Wait till tomorrow to be sure he has actually changed his mind.
Yeah, good point. Attempt is correct. I see where you are headed.
Keith Olberman will go ballistic!
What little I could stomach over at Huffington Post seems to be broken into two camps...one faction is completely pissed off at Barry-O and the other half is defending the decision saying it would harm US Troops...the same exact rationale the Bush administration had...they are flip flopping just like Dear Leader is...
I suspect Mr. Obama has reviewed the “torture” photos and realizes that they are not as shocking or disturbing as he would have liked. They will not serve his purpose to release them.
Gibbs is on Fox now, going hummina hummina as reporters nibble at his ankles.
Meanwhile DUmmies are having serious allergic reactions to all this, their breaking news thread shows discouragement and some gnashing of teeth at the CHANGE in the Lord 0bama.
Reporters in presser not happy either!
There was an excellent article on NRO about Obama’s decision to release the photos. I think that it was by Andrew McCarthy. He said that Obama was making a purely arbitrary decision to please his far left wing supporters, that there is no court order and no reason to release these picts other than to further damage the US reputation and blame the Bush administration.
I guess that’s the reason that the CIA leaked those memos about the congressional briefings. Then we had the Afghanis stepping up the accusations about the killing of civilians. Obama’s got himself in a real pickle, now.
Neighbor of the Beast, borrowing the Beast’s lawnmower, thanks, I’ll look at DU. But everytime I look at them, or Huffington, or Buzzflash, I marvel at how stupid they are not only in their thinking but in how they set the forum and post’s up. FR is by far the best I’ve seen, and no advertising, which really helps.
He knows that Cheney is poised to release his own set of data proving that the techniques have saved many American lives.
Thank you Vice-President Cheney!
Did this article, by Andy McCarthy, influence the Obama flip on this issue?
That damned evil Cheney must be blackmailing Obama!
*******
Maybe they could speculate on the “goods” that they are apparently admitting Cheney has on their “savior”. By the way, what kind of savior can be blackmailed? s/
Yes, because high-ranking CIA officials might be hauled before the world court.
If they did, they might "find" one of these in a Evidence Locker with Obama's name on it:
They wreak havoc saying one thing and doing another on so many fronts, along with the havok from their new policies.
This is all from Saul Alinsky’s playbook. That, and general incompetence.

Mr Obama now believes pooring gas on yourself and touching a lit match to the fuel could cause bodily harm, White House officials said.
geniuS geenIUS GEEEENIUS!
“Some of the damage has been done, all in his plan to trash America, its military, our missions in two theaters, and the Bush Administration, ie, all patriots.”
I suspect three elements caused this decision: (1) Polls show he’s going to get slaughtered if he releases them; (2) By technically opposing the release but getting the Court to do his dirty work, he gets political cover from being slaughtered; and/or(3) The pictures aren’t all that bad. He assesses that they do more damage as they are imagined to be than as they really are.
