If conservatives run and win enough primaries, they inherit the GOP and its organization and ballot position. If conservatives cannot win inside the GOP, they will not find easier going outside of it.

The last thing Conservatives want is to inherit a party that has continually refused to accept Conservative principles for many years. Conservative are moving beyond the OP precisely because they haven't won in the OP for years. Rejoining an increasingly socialist party is hardly winning.

The Republican party is not “socialist.” Indeed, it is the political home of most conservatives in the country and is rapidly repudiating the errors of the Bush years.
