Maybe it's not necessarily right for the Church to have those guidelines.

Following the examples of Christ, the Apostles and St. Paul isn't right? That's absurd. I suppose next you'll be suggesting that the Church do away with the Ten Commandments.

Is there a point to such torture?

Only people who allow their genitals to dictate the way they live their lives consider it torture.

It's always been my understanding that taking the Celibacy vow was to insure our Priests wouldn't fall in love with a woman and get married. The Church believes that a Priest can't serve his Parishioners well if he is torn between caring for them versus caring for his his own family.

Correct me if I'm wrong, please.
