My theory is that we tend to elect conservative GOP candidates at the local level and when they get to Washington, they “go native.” This means they get real liberal real fast because the GOP leadership “explains” how the Village of Whores works. If they want to rise in power in Washington, they need to dance the dance. Then we lose them as conservatives. The problem is our GOP leaders sell out to keep power.

I've seen them begin their road to compromise on the local level. I remember a water board candidate responding to a pro-life question this way:
"On the water board--chuckle, chuckle, wink, wink--I won't make any abortion decisions."
I said to him "if you get elected to water board and you use that platform to move on to higher office, where your pro-life views will matter, shouldn't you be up-front now, before we invest in you?"
He coughed and stammered and admitted he didn't have any core values other than moving up the Republican chain.

(If you preach "too big to let fail," you're also preaching "too small to let succeed.")
