Democratic Sen. Arlen Specter blamed Republicans for the death of Republican Jack Kemp.

Specter was on CBS on Sunday trying to rationalize spending 44 years as a Democrat-in-Republican clothing.

Jack Kemp died on Sunday from hip cancer.

Specter, a cancer survivor himself, cited President Nixon’s call in 1970 for a war on cancer.

“But as a matter of principle, I’m becoming much more comfortable with the Democrats’ approach,” Specter said. “And one of the items that I’m working on, Bob, is funding for medical research… If we had pursued what President Nixon declared in 1970 as the war on cancer, we would have cured many strains. I think Jack Kemp would be alive today. And that research has saved or prolonged many lives, including mine.”

Really?

In the 39 years since Nixon called for that war, Democrats controlled the House for the first 24 years. They controlled the Senate for the first 10 years. In fact in the last 39 years, Democrats have controlled the House for 27 years and the Senate for 22 years.

And actually, the Democratic health plan calls for fewer specialists — including the very oncologists who saved Specter’s life.
