It’s also worth noting that the Whigs collapsed in much the same way the GOP is collapsing today. I don't see any such thing, there is no similarity between the Whigs that died out after 23 years of existence and were instantly replaced by the Republican party and anything that is happening today.

The Whigs self-destructed over social conservatism (slavery) and that is very similar to what the GOP is doing now.
