The World Health Organisation tonight raised the pandemic alert level to five out of six after the continued spread of swine flu world wide.
Margaret Chan, the organisation's director-general, said tonight: "I have decided to raise the current level of influenza pandemic alert from phase 4 to phase 5.
"Influenza pandemics must be taken seriously precisely because of their capacity to spread rapidly to every country in the world."
Making a call to governments, she said: "This change to a higher phase of alert is a signal to governments, to ministries of health and other industries, to the pharmaceutical industry and business industry that certain actions must be undertaken now with increased urgency and at an accelerated pace."

I think it’s obviously connected to the financial crisis, as most likely a distraction. Wouldn’t they close the borders worldwide if it were real?

Will that be the case? Too early, but best to be safe.

I understand your question but there is a reason this is more serious. Humans have no natural immunity to the H1N1 strain so it is not like regular flew.
You might ask why it is such a big deal when there are so few cases? For those modeling pandemics, think of the current cases like lighting a fuse. That is why the phase 5 definition has to do with the number of countries and whether the strain is confirmed to be spreading human to human. That is a lit fuse. Then, as it reaches a tipping point, it explodes exponentially. That is how pandemics work. We are still in the fuse lighting phase but the fuse is getting shorter. Now is the time to put in any mitigation strategies before it hits the critical level.

I was musing to a co-worker that maybe we should just spread the word that we saw a few people on our floor leave work early today and “they didn’t look that well.”

Well, FWIW, there is a viable theory that “Native Americans” had a much more extensive & advanced culture in the Americas prior to the arrival of Europeans, the first of which (who stayed only briefly) dropped off a virus which eviscerated the native population, leaving only a few to carry on in much more primitive circumstances. Early explorers described finding numerous villages whose inhabitants had either mostly or entirely expired shortly before (the few survivors were unhelpful due to obvious language barriers). Recent biological analysis indicates the indigenous population simply lacked the genetics required to fight off common European diseases; mere flu to the explorers was pervasively terminal to indians.
Can this swine flu but be transmitted thru the internet? I’ve got a mask and gloves on just as a precaution. ;)
There are almost certainly thousands of cases in the US by now yet few if any deaths. In fact almost everyone here that has been infected has experienced mild symptoms. Same in Mexico, there have been very few deaths yet the virus has been spreading in that country for weeks if not months.
This is entirely overblown and overhyped and it surprises me that so many Freepers have fallen prey to the propaganda.
