He will be humiliated and destroyed in next year’s election, just as another right wing extremist, Rick Santorum, was.

I liked Santorum. I thought he was reasoned and well spoken. He didn't strike me as extremist.

I wonder if Mike Steele will still support him...

Hahaha! That was my first thought..."Will the GOP leadership still give money to his campaign?" Sadly, it wouldn't surprise me.

Interesting news. This can only mean that he fully expected to Toomey to beat the sh!t out of him in a primary battle.

I accept (in advance) the apologies of every Freeper who ever criticized me for suggesting that I was crazy for calling @ssholes like this radical leftists who didn't deserve the support of the Republican Party.

F#ck you and the horse you rode in on, Mr. Specter.

I've pinged Jim Robinson on this (with apologies for my language) because I'm going to be sending a $200 donation to FreeRepublic shortly.

This is not just about Democrat vs. Republican. Specter has been in the tank since days on the Warren Commission. His connections to Dulles who was fired as head of the CIA by Kennedy for the Bay of Pigs fiasco and then appointed to investigate his former bosses murder along with Specter smells. Kennedy’s assassination stopped the dismantling of the CIA which Kennedy promised just prior to his demise!

Oh my goodness. I would be freaking out but Rush is calming me down. lol. I live in Pennsylvania and now if he does this we are officially fully blue....Ugh! Even though Spector does not vote our side all the time it was nice to know that Pennsylvania at least had one Republican Senator not that he was great but still...

As you say, it all now depends on the "less radical" Democrats.

Over the longer run, now the Democrats hardly need even inform the Republicans of their intentions or confer with them. No "earmarks" for Republicans and no spending in Republican districts. Too many voters will quickly vote for the guys that give them things.

Every concern I had during the general election has or will come to pass. This same sort of situation occurred recently in Southeast Asian (Thai) politics and the only recourse was a military coup which uncharacteristically handed power back to civilians.

Here, it may take an international terrorist confrontation to sway the public away from a one party dictatorship.

Pennsylvania has been trending strong blue lately: Dem Governor, other Senator Casey is a Dem who defeated a hard core conservative, Rick Santorum.
Obama won Pennsylvania 3.276 million to 2.555 million for McCain.
Even Murtha won reelection.
The Dems are promising Specter no primary challenge and lots of money for his reelection campaign plus a Chairmanship in the next Congress if he wins reelection and keeping his seniority.

No, the reason the GOP brand is in the toilet is because the schools and the press have painted us a particularly way, year after year after year. It is what my students know and that IS IT.

Just to show you how insidious and complete this control is, find yourself a public scholar or intellectual who is an open conservative. Then see how they are referred to in publications: “Conservative scholar, professor so-and-so”—in the same way that publications would say “Nigerian scholar, professor so-and-so.”

For most people, even conservatives at heart, conservatism has become a foreign land.

The only bright side to the debacle is that, if you remove Philadelphia and the four collar counties from the PA total, the GOP won the state. That is a pretty big “IF”—but, right now, we will hold on to some GOP congressional seats.

Not much of a bright side, but ther you have it . . . .

I’m a Pennsylvanian who voted for him because I wanted a Republican in the Senate, not a Democrat.

Then frankly, you are at fault.

If he’s switching, does that mean he’s going to be a republican now?

Personally, I don’t see why everyone thinks the party labels mean much of anything at all anyway.

Spectre is now simply stating the obvious and acting accordingly...but his move is much more about him and what he feels are his chances for re-election, than ideology, principle, or anything else...which, IMHO, paints the most accurate picture of the man.
