It says 6.0...there was a smaller quake in CA a few days back too (same fault?)

Took them 14 minutes to get the info up on the earthquake site.

It's listed as a 6.0 here.

5.8 is something to worry about in the parts of Mexico City that sit on landfill in the lake ~ or those parts sitting on unconsolidated volcanic ash.

In fact, this could be a precursor of the nearby volcano firing up!

They apparantly are not going to make it to 2012!

As I recall the terrible Mexico City quake in 1986 (or thereabouts) wasn’t very strong by our standards, hopefully, since then, the building codes have been more strictly enforced, we’ll find out soon enough.

Maybe Obamarx will offer them $50,000 in aid...

wikipedia says Mex City is not on a fault line but is susceptible to earthquakes

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1985_Mexico_City_earthquake

>>Much of Mexico’s volcanic and seismic activity stems from the movement of the North American plate against the Cocos and Pacific plates and it is one of the most active trenches in the world. Each year more than 90 temblors above magnitude 4.0 are recorded in this zone.
While not on or near any fault line like San Francisco or Los Angeles, Mexico City is vulnerable to earthquakes. The main reason for this is the surface geology of the area, especially the downtown area.

"Those poor folks just can’t buy a break. What a bad time for this to happen."

No kidding. Dragging your butt out of bead when your sick as a dog (or pig) with the flu to flee an earth quake must really suck. I'd probably just stay in bed and hope it's over with quick if the concrete roof falls in.

Overheard on Karl Rove's cell phone:

"...so Dick was like 'Let's hit him the swine flu idea Rummy was toying with, and I was like no I want an earthquake. And then it hit me -- lets do both!"

5.8 isn’t that strong here, but there this won’t be good.

Maybe its a stampede of 20 million Mexico Citians fleeing from the swine flu and heading for the U.S

LOL! That was brilliant.

I would agree. 5.8 or 6.0 isn’t a big quake here, but in parts of Mexico City it could be a big problem.

5.8 not catastrophe. Most people don’t realize the Richter scale is logarithmic: A 5.8 is 10 times less bad than a 6.8, for instance.

5.8 not a massive quake, but in the densely populated poorly built Mexico City it could be a monster. How much more can Mexico take? I don't think the plague of frogs has been unleashed yet.

The 1985 quake was 8.1. It was massive.

Rush just said on his radio show, “Poor Mexico can’t get a break. Mexico has drug wars, the guy who shook Obama’s hand is dead, they have swine flu, and now an earthquake.”

“What has changed in Mexico in the last two weeks? Obama went there!” quote unquote
